Dr. Mehdi Vazeen, MD

I was the 22nd one in a row without ever being told it was an eye mill. I have the wrong lens, lots of problems, bad vision, black shadow from edge of lens, and over a year of more visits in hope for something better. He wanted to do a Yag treatment and mad it worse. How and why it happened only he knows that. True art is from the hand on the brush.

My appointment was was made for 10 AM with Dr. Vazeen. I waited for an hour to be seen and when I told the clerk she said we are short 2 techs. After the TECH did all the exam in walks a new Dr. who had just started 3 days ago. She examined me then I was sent home with a new prescription. I was never told that Dr. Vazeen would not be seeing me nor was I asked if it was ok to be seen by someone else. If he dosnt have time to see patients then why is he being scheduled to see them?

I was at the beginning stage of catarachs. He is a wonderful doctor. Precise and effective. I just had it done today. Scared to death of course, but all is well and bright, and it is great to see it all now. I love it. He is wonderful. I could hear him as he proceeded, but kept my mouth shut, Done and happy that is what I am. That is for sure.

This doctor didn't take the time to properly describe the PRK procedure. Indeed, he made it sound like few seconds, no pain, etc. When I experienced serious corneal abrasion later, he pointed to the "liability agreement" and noted it said dry eye may result. Dry eye is not the same as corneal abrasion or blepharitis, both of which I experienced almost immediately post-treatment.

Pre-op: The office was clean, the staff friendly. Dr. Vazeen seemed attentive, but hurried. However, the day of the operation (PRK) I was told I wouldn't feel a thing but I could take some minor "relaxant" if I wanted to. I decided if there was no pain, why did I need a relaxant? Wrong. Operation: I felt the cut and, of course, smelled the burning tissue. After 36 years in the military, you don't forget those kinds of smell. A little prior communication would have gone a long way, as would being directed for my comfort and safety to take the sedative.Post-op: A disaster. I believe Dr. Vazeen did something that did not take into account my 20-year-old RK scalpel scars on the cornea. I awoke almost every night in wrenching agony, as if two knife points were being stuck in my eyes. But for 18 months of post-op visits, he told me my vision was fine, and (very defensively) noted that I signed a waiver noting that "dry eye" may be one of the side effects of the surgery. He gave… me a steroidal ointment to place in my eyes every night. It worked for a time, but steroids for extended periods are absolutely contraindicated for corneal application. On the visit I decided would be my last to him, he said there was nothing wrong with my eyes and glibly noted it may be a "neurological" issue -- his euphemism for psychosomatic?Rather than accept wrenching pain, sleepless nights and/or corneal damage from the steroids, I made an appointment with a doctor on the adjunct faculty at Stanford University, a 12-hour, overnight round trip. Within 10 minutes of looking at my eyes using a standard ophthalmoscope with fluorescein stain and a blue-light, he diagnosed the source of my pain and inability to sleep as recurrent corneal erosion, diagrammed for me on my chart the two holes he clearly saw in my outer corneal epithelium and recommended a non-surgical course of treatment using over-the-counter medications and patient-controlled environmental, pre-bedtime and waking routines.I may never have written this review had I not visited the second doctor. But 10 minutes is all it took to begin to undo 18 months of needless pain and suffering. I cannot recommend and will dissuade any friend who asks me about Dr. Vazeen.

Dr. Vazeen was awesome. I am a bit young to have cataracts. Due to the severity of them, the Dr. was able to schedule and complete the surgery on both eyes in less than 3 weeks after my initial visit. His office is the most organized I have ever been in. With the friendly staff and the newest equipment, I felt assured and confident I was getting the best care possible.

Dr. Vazeen failed to wait the requisite time for my numbing shot to take effect; therefore, 80% or more of my cyst removal procedure was felt wholly and completely by me. I cried, grimaced, moaned through clenched teeth, hyperventilated, and nearly ripped the belt off my jeans. I repeatedly said "I feel the cut. I feel the cut!" I also fully felt the impact of the cauterization, the first one. This is a person's nightmare in real life! This should not happen in this day and age with our current standard of care!! He finally gave me a second anesthetizing shot in a different area almost at the end of the procedure, and I thankfully did not feel the final cauterization. But by then he was done. It was beyond traumatic. I don't have adequate words here to express the agony of having a 4mm-by-4mm cyst cut from my inner eye, near the puncta, without the advantage of anesthesia. There is no doubt he knew of my pain. His assistant admitted to me later that he could have waited longer for… the shot to take effect. She said, "I'll tell him." I said that I had made myself very clear during the procedure that I felt everything, and she agreed, saying I had made it clear to him, oh, yeah, that I felt everything. Dr. Vazeen was insensitive and plowed through the procedure. He should have not begun at all before checking to see the shot had taken effect. Or at the very least stopped once he discovered the severity of my agony. Did he not even know where to apply the shot? I cannot emphasize strongly enough to anyone to avoid this doctor. I felt physically traumatized and was led immediately out of the office, feeling faint and weak. I needed to sit there longer, but they were apparently in a hurry and needed the room. The doctor did not utter one syllable to me after the procedure. Do not go to him.My rating/review here goes directly to the lack of competency and insensitivity of the doctor himself and not necessarily to the facility nor the staff.

A courteous and knowledgeable physician. Overall a high reccomendation for this doctor.
