Dr. Peter Hanks Maughan, MD

I don’t think he wanted me as a patient…. He kept just sitting there like he didn’t know how I could have the pain I was having because it didn’t jive with my MRI of my neck and back. Come to find out it wasn’t a neck or back problem and yet he set me up for spinal injections and discussed surgeries to help my issue. Turned out it wasn’t an issue with my spine at all but rather my ulnar nerve in my elbow. Thank goodness I got another opinion and he looked at other possibilities for my problem.

Dr Maughan and Dr Lori Passey DNP were both amazing! Very compassionate and very well educated on Chiari Malformation. My surgery was a success and my recovery was quick! No complications.

Dr. Maughan did surgery on me at the beginning of the summer for a lumbar fusion and an iliac bone graft. After the surgery, I was in severe pain for the next 3 days. I was miserable! I could not get relief! I told him about it and he changed nothing! He showed no compassion or caring. I felt like I could not begin to start the healing process because of all the pain I was fighting. I was so worn out with it! After I came home, a few weeks later, I called the office for some extra help with constipation because the things I was taking weren't working. His response was to wean off the pain meds! I said I would love to go off the pain meds if I wasn't in so much pain! I could not believe it. I never saw him in my follow up visits (which was fine). His nurse practitioner Lori Passey is great! She is caring and compassionate as well as knowledgeable and professional. She is very helpful. She saves his practice (in my opinion)! He may be a good surgeon but his pt care… and compassion are very much lacking! I am still in pain every day almost 4 months out from surgery. They finally just had me start phys ther a couple of weeks ago. It is helping some. But it was way over due. I have not been grateful (as of yet) that I had the surgery, even though my disc L4L5 was completely herniated and I was bone on bone there). I have great hopes it will get better though with strengthening through PT. I went to Dr. Maughan based almost solely on patient reviews I read online. I would not refer anyone to him!

Very rude and condescending. Instead of answering questions and explaining things, he uses quips like a used car salesman. Thinks very highly of himself.

Dr. Maughn is AMAZING!!!!

He took care of my tumor and I am still on this side of the grass. His assistant, Lori Passey, could not have better in her medical professionalism. A highly recommended combination for necessary brain surgery.

I have never been so disappointed in an encounter with a health care professional. I am a single mother who lives in a small, rural community in Northeastern Utah. My primary care physician found a small mass in my brain with an MRI. He, then, referred me to Dr. Maughan. They spoke at least once on the phone regarding my case, and decided to get me into see him the following week. I took the day off work, paid for babysitters, drove the 3 hours to Murray, and, finally, made it to his office 10 minutes early for my appointment. And then I waited. Two hours! I was put in an examination room where his FNP, Lori, first saw me. Lori told me in the first five minutes of my visit that Dr. Maughan couldn't help until we found out if my case is surgical. Dr. Maughan then came in and said the same thing. They knew they were going to refer me to another doctor before they even saw me. My question is, is Dr. Maughan that hard-up for money? He has to waste 12 hours of my day, and my… hard-earned money (I had to pay the $50 copay) just to make ends meet? I doubt it. I think the real problem here is his lack of compassion. Shouldn't he have ethically and as a professional courtesy to my physician said "I can't take her case until I know it's sergical. Please refer her to ______."?

Careful analysis of all test results with advice on surgery/no-surgery decision.

Dr. Maughan was incredibly kind and compassionate when my husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor from stage 4 melanoma. I can't say enough wonderful things about him! Excellent doctor and amazing person!

Dr. Maughn was kind, attentive, thorough and performed a very successful back surgery for me.
