Facilities and Equipment
Digital X-rays
For the past 50 plus years, film based x-rays have been used in dentistry. Every so often a change in the film allowed a decrease of radiation to the patient. Recently, digital x-ray equipment was developed that dramatically reduced radiation with superior x-ray image quality, while revealing more information of the teeth and jaws.
In the fall of 2007, our office converted to the digital radiography. Now, extremely low radiation dose x-rays are taken with x-ray images in seconds. These are viewed immediately.
Laser Dentistry
Many lasers are available in dentistry. They are categorized by tissue for which they are intended to be used. Hard tissue lasers are intended for use on the teeth. Soft tissue lasers are intended for use on the gums.
Currently, soft tissue lasers are the most effective. This type of laser has been very effective in treating gum disease and correcting other minor problems such as canker sores and cold sores.
Comparatively, hard tissue lasers are not working as effective on the teeth. As development proceeds, these lasers" in the future may replace the drill. Using minimally invasive techniques, the typical dental drill does not require anesthetic in many situations, and is more accurate than the hard tissue lasers of today.
