Dr. Edgar Rene Alvarez, MD

My experience was a terrible one. Dr. Alvarez was glued to his computer the whole time, mumbled and grumbled and made an unwelcome comment about my tattoo (along with a sweeping generalization of Millennials in general). I had to constantly move the conversation forward and ask numerous questions, because he didn't provide context or details. Upon reviewing x-rays of my back, he commented that it looked like the spine of a geriatric patient. (I'm 28 and was there for chronic back pain. Not funny.) In addition, the office sent my Rx info to the wrong pharmacy, which caused a delay and additional work on my part to correct. He also ordered blood work and rather than question an abnormal finding that was clearly an outlier/anomaly (10 times higher than the "standard range" for 2 enzymes), he briskly suggested that I should consider alcohol rehab and moved on, which left me shocked, anxious and confused. I now see another UF Health doctor who is a breath of fresh air. My new lab work is… normal, my concerns were acknowledged, physical therapy was ordered for my back, and I finally feel good about my overall preventative care. I won't be returning to Dr. Alvarez's office again. Search the internet and other websites for reviews of Alvarez and read what people have said. You'll see I'm not alone and there is a clear pattern of behavior.

I went twice, and I’m not going back. He stared at his computer the whole time while mumbling and grumbling. I received limited explanation and elaboration on my diagnosis and next steps -- my questions were sloughed off. He condescendingly told me I have the spine of a geriatric patient after reviewing my x-rays. (Nice way to make me feel insulted and anxious about my lab results.) He also made a ‘millennial stereotype’ comment about my tattoo. Finally, this office failed to properly submit my prescription to my requested mail-in pharmacy, so I had to call to follow up and have them manually refill it to a local store when I nearly ran out of medication.

He made very sly comments about my family situation and dismissed one of my concerns. When I told him another concern, he immediately just started writing me a prescription without further questioning me. When I explained to him I would rather figure out what was going on with my body instead of immediately taking medicine, he got huffy puffy and said he’ll refer me to a gastrointestinal. I hate to write bad reviews & never do no matter how horrible the experience but this one really got to me!

Dr. Alvarez recently sent me for an esophagus scope because he did not like my blood test results. Turns out I had early stage esophagus cancer which was completely removed by a surgeon. The surgeon said If I had this cancer in my for another year I could be in very bad shape.

Dr. Alvarez has been my physician for 5 plus years. I have had nothing but excellent care from Dr. Alvarez and staff. Dr. Alvarez speaks Spanish which is my native language. I recommended him to all of my family and friends.

This doctor is dismissive, misinformed, narrow-minded. He got frustrated with my elderly parents, and was verbally abusive to them during an appointment when my parents had questions and differing needs. A doctor is not allowed to mistreat patients that way. NEVER trust your family to this doctor.

Needs to focus on presenting problem. Wanted to cover things that were not an issue and made that his primary focus.

Horrible doctor; rude and rushed. Inconsiderate staff. Would never recommend this practice to anyone.
