Dr. Edward Paul Junkins, MD

Edward Junkins, MD, MPH, is the Associate Dean of Education, Student Affairs, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Junkins received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Medical Degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his Pediatrics internship and Residency at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and his Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at the University of Utah. He also received a Master’s of Public Health degree from the University of Utah. Dr. Junkins joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics in July 2000.

Dr. Junkins was awarded a prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Faculty Development Scholarship in the early stages of his academic career. His research focus has been on the epidemiology of pediatric injuries within a region, as well as pediatric trauma outcomes. He …has numerous publications and abstracts as a result of his work. Over recent years, he has refocused his attention on the educational mission of the university.

Dr. Junkins currently serves as the Associate Dean for Education, Student Affairs in the Deans Office of the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is formerly the Assistant Dean of Diversity and Community Outreach. He has become a regional expert in Cultural Competence and Mutual Respect, delivering invited numerous presentations throughout the region on the subject. He assists with the School of Medicine educational curriculum particularly regarding Cultural Competence and Professionalism. He is presently a Co-Investigator on a National Institutions of Health (NIH) Pediatrics Fellowship training grant as an expert in Cultural Competence, as well as Co-Investigator on an Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ) grant for professional communication.
