Dr. Edwin Michael Montell, MD

I left his office shaking. He literally came into the room with a scowl and his arms crossed. I have been having nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and other issues for 2 months. I was put on a waiting list for an appointment for 2 months. Because I was desperate, I went to the hospital on Oahu to get treatment. They performed a colonoscopy, endoscopy, and ultrasound. I brought the results to the appointment with me. I asked Dr. Montell, whom I had seen previously, if he could work with me on a treatment plan or something, as I would prefer not to have to keep going to Queens hospital for treatment. I guess he is territorial or something, because he walked into the room and said "so, you already saw the best specialists on Oahu" and said "if you want help, your going to have to keep going to them, because I'm not going to help you." I told him I saw him before and I have continued to have issues over the years, and that I was desperate to get the ball rolling. He said "nope, I… told you years ago and I am going to tell you again, I can't help you". At that point, he was raising his voice at me. He acted like I had offended him or something. I told him I am sorry I went to another doctor, but I was on a long waiting list and literally lost 10 lbs in a month from not being able to eat. He just said he flat out refused to treat me. I am sad he is one of the only gastroenterologists in Hilo. I was almost in tears when I left the appointment. A person that caustic shouldn't be in public talking to people, let alone seeing patients who need treatment. I am going to recommend to everyone go to Oahu if you can, rather than seeing this jerk.

Saw him for severe pain/nausea. Told me nausea usually unrelated to stomach/gut; he is very knowledgeable in his field, an expert. However, he lacks empathy, doesn't care if you are in excruciating pain, and believes that a one-size fits all treatment applies to everyone. Made me feel like an idiot and yelled at me on phone. Not going back.
