Listened to me describe hyperactivity in my yo for 30 minutes before determining he had ADHD, without ever seeing any behaviors. She described ADHD as a genetic disease which could only be treated with medication. Asked if he could have hyperactivity without ADHD. No. Asked about behavioral and other forms of therapy without medication. No. Was very taken aback when I said we would not be medicating our 6 year old, and stated that this was in fact the best treatment and that she had over 20 years of experience as a professional psychologist, but that I was the mother so it was ultimately my choice... I've never experienced a medical professional so ready to medicate a young child in my life, without properly collecting information, without listening to the family, and with an archaic treatment plan. It's saddening to witness the driving forces behind our epidemic of over-medicating children at an increasingly young age.
