Dr. Elaine E. Metcalf, MD

Singlehandedly made my birth experience a traumatic one. She told me if I go until my due date my baby will be 11 lbs, likely get his shoulders stuck on the way out and she wont be held liable for his injuries so she FORCED me into a c-section. As in, she handed me the paperwork to sign for a scheduled C-section, announced to her receptionists I am not allowed to leave this office until I sign and then shut the door to the room. I was in tears, telling her I dont want to schedule one and she kept on bullying me into signing. Fast forward to day of my scheduled c-section…as I am cut open and she pulls my son out, she announces “8 lbs, 8 oz. Guess you probably didnt need a c-section after all!” with a snarky grin and laugh. I was reminded of how terrible she is today as i am pregnant with my second and had an appt at NWH and in talking with my new doctor he said she has a reputation for pushing unnecessary c-sections. On top of all that she is just a cold, unpleasant person. Everytime… I would walk in for an appt toward the end of pregnancy she would look down at my belly, laugh and say something along the lines of “I just cant stop staring at it, I have never seen such a BIG belly!!” So many great OBs in the Newton area, please do yourself a favor and see one of them instead and AVOID Dr Metcalf.

Dr.Metcalf gave a great advice. She is an expert in her field. Thank you very much!

She is the first best doctor I have met in the US, before suggesting any treatment for my issues, she first listened to all my previous history or concerns and verified all records and then proceeded with her suggestion in my case. Very friendly, very attentive to our concerns, I will visit her again for sure with good news..:)

I saw Dr. Metcalf for many years and she misdiagnosed me. To the point I had to have 3 surgeries in a year all which could have been prevented. Being 27/28 and going through all this prevented me from having children naturally. Then I had additional surgeries with IVF. She is a horrible, horrible doctor. I tell all my friends to NOT see her when they go to this practice. Before I realized how horrible she was I was informed by a doctor in the same practice that the surgery she did on me was useless because a D&C isn’t going to correct stage 4 endometriosis. She then said I needed my ovaries removed. Thank god I never took her advice and still have both my ovaries and currently under excellent care... Away from her!

I've been through 2 pregnancies with Dr. Metcalf and she was nothing but compassionate, caring, attentive, and professional throughout. My first was an emergency c-section and she even stayed well past her shift to see my delivery through. Even after my 2 pregnancies, she's been attentive to any concerns I've had and has treated me like a good friend. I can't recommend her enough! If you want to be coddled & treated like a child, she's not for you. If you want an absolute professional who knows her stuff, will listen to and address your concerns, and is more like that honest friend we all need who'll tell you your zipper is down and give you a hug with a dose of reality when you're upset, she's the Dr. for you!! I'll never go to anyone else!

I scheduled an appt. with Dr. Metcalf b/c I hadn't gotten my period in about 6 months (not pregnant). The first, and only time, I saw her she immediately informed me that she was in a rush, on her way to a delivery, and couldn't really do much for me. She was in the room for a total of 5 minutes, told me to schedule an ultrasound, and was gone. I understood she was in a rush, and simply went ahead with the ultrasound. I had the ultrasound, got my results, and didn't hear from her office for follow-up regarding the original issue until almost two months after. And the only reason they followed-up was b/c I asked them what Dr. Metcalf's treatment plan was going to be, given the fact that I still had no period and lots of cramps. If I hadn't asked, Dr. Metcalf would not have bothered to investigate/resolve the issue I originally went in for. Needless to say I found a new doctor. I was very upset that a problem that was causing me pain and could be potentially very serious was… treated with such little importance by the doctor and her staff.

Dr Metcalf is horrible and should really reconsider her profession. I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with her for a very long and difficult labor. She didn't listen to any of my wishes and wasn't the least bit concerned that anesthesis was NOT WORKING AT ALL. Questions I asked were dismissed and she had the nerve to tell me that "she's the doctor and has been doing this a lot longer than me". Do not go to this doctor unless you want an authoritarian health professional, with zero dialogue concerning your health and body.

I have been with Dr. Metcalf for 8 yrs now and I could never have imagined that this level of comfort with a doctor was possible. If I call about any type of concern, they address it with a level of professionalism that is second to none. The staff is warm and friendly, like a second family. They have helped me through 2 successful pregnancies and then through some difficult times. I would recommend them to anyone. Dr Metcalf is the reason I would only go to this practice and the reason I have recommended others to do the same.
