Dr. Ellen Casey, MDCAQSMFACSM

Dr. Ellen Casey is an Attending Physiatrist in the Department of Physiatry and the Women's Sports Medicine Center at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She is also a Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. After earning her medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine, she completed residency in Physiatry and fellowship in Sports Medicine at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) where she also served as chief resident. She was the Co-Director of the Women's Sports Program at RIC from 2010-2014 and the Co-Director for the Penn Center for the Female Athlete from 2016-2017. Dr. Casey's clinical practice focuses on the treatment of sports medicine injuries and spine disorders. She has particular expertise in the female athlete, including the relative energy deficiency in sport, the female athlete triad, stress fractures and exercise during and after pregnancy. Her goal is to work …with patients to optimize function, return to an active lifestyle and help prevent future injury. As a former collegiate gymnast, she is passionate about caring for all athletes, particularly gymnasts and dancers, and has served as USA Gymnastics Women's National Team physician since 2019. Dr. Casey is actively involved in sports medicine research. She is interested in the underpinnings of sex and gender disparity in musculoskeletal injury, including the role of sex hormones in knee injuries (particularly anterior cruciate ligament tears). Dr. Casey has been awarded numerous grants to support her research, including K12 and RO1 grants from the National Institutes of Health and foundation awards from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
