Dr. Eric Matthew Berkson, MD

I was referred to Dr. Berkson through a colleagues husband who was training under him and aspired to practice as he does. I was not disappointed. Dr. Berkson took his time with me during my appointments. He explained the pathology of my knee problems, the options I had, and together we came up with a treatment plan. He would ask me my opinion and what my thoughts and concerns were. After having a pretty big surgery with him his care remained exceptional. He called me the night I came home from the hospital and gave me further instructions on how to control my pain. When I was feeling unsure about some symptoms I was having post operatively I paged him and even though he was in the operating room he called me back within 10 minutes and gave me reassurance as well as more pain medication which he assured me I still needed. On my first post operative visit he spent at least 30-40 minutes with me. I had to wait a bit of time to see him past my appointment time but trust me his is worth… the wait as he is usually behind helping his patients and spending adequate time with them. During this appointment we went over how the surgery went and he showed me detailed pictures of my surgery and explained what he did and how it went. He changed my dressing, walked me down to the xray suite to get a quick xray and answered all of my questions. Dr. Berkson has continued to remind me that I can call him whenever needed if any problems should arise. He is a phenomenal physician and an all around great person who truly cares about his patients and really takes the time to think about the best plan of care for them without just jumping to surgery. I hands down recommend Dr. Berkson especially if you have complex knee issues such as myself. He is by far the best Orthopedic Surgeon I have ever met and he is a really great guy. I recommend him without hesitation .

I fractured my elbow and shattered it into multiple pieces which required a plate and screws. Dr. Berkson was the MAIN reason I made it through and healed properly. From the moment I met him, he was calm, measured, and caring. He could see that I was worried about my surgery. He took time to explain things to me. He was so skilled and pieced my elbow back together again. Even the nurses in the surgical unit were raving about him before I had my surgery. It is clear that his skill and deep understanding of my injury made me feel secure throughout the consultation, surgery, and follow up appointments. I trusted him implicitly and my outcome was excellent. After I fractured my elbow, I couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel, but he kept me focused. He gave clear instructions after my surgery. He is the absolute BEST doctor! I cannot say enough about the quality of care I received from him.

Clinical consult was very detailed. Things were explained very well. Dr. Berkson left us feeling confident about the LCL surgery that he was going to perform on our son. Unfortunately, our insurance company would not approve the surgery at the final hour. We were in Pre-op and Dr. Berkson was on the phone working diligently to try to get the surgery to happen. In the end, he found a fabulous doctor for my son and we are on the road to getting him better. Although he didn’t perform the surgery, we still recommend him. He is a great guy who is highly qualified.

Condescending and in a rush...little or no explanation and peeved when patient insists.

Dr. Berkson performed surgery to repair a pectoralis major muscle teat / tendon rupture that I suffered while bench pressing in the gym. This is a fairly uncommon injury, which if left untreated, results in a significant permanent loss of anterior strength and a prominent chest deformity caused by the tendon having completely detached from the humerus (arm bone). Realizing the severity of the injury, and that best results are achieved with surgery occuring within a few weeks of injury, Dr. Berkson scheduled an immediate in-office consultation with me during which he examined the injury, and reviewed the MRIs and radiology report. Dr. Berkson explained the nature of the injury, my options, and prognosis for a complete recovery and return of strength with surgery. I opted for Dr. Berkson to perform surgery so I could return to my active lifestyle. Surgery was scheduled to occur a few days later, and was a complete success. My family was in the waiting room, and I'm told that Dr.… Berkson went to see them after surgery and let them know that surgery was successful and everything went as expected, which they really appreciated. Later that day, while at home, I experienced a little discomfort that prompted me to contact Dr. Berkson's pager number. In less than a minute, I received a call from Dr. Berkson who explained that the discomfort I was experiencing was temporary, and was likely due to the anesthesia I received earlier that day. He was correct. A few hours later, the discomfort subsided. I'm several weeks post-surgery and happy to report that my recovery is going expremely well. I didn't experience any significant pain, which is generally associated with this type of injury, and have fully regained mobility in my arm, all of which I attribute to having had an excellent surgeon. I've had two post-op visits with Dr. Berkson, and am scheduled to visit with him again in another few weeks. At the initial consultation and each post-op visit, Dr. Berkson has been friendly, attentive, and has taken the time to answer all of my questions. At no time have I ever feel rushed or unimportant. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Berkson and his competent staff. Highly recommended.

So glad after a sports injury we brought our child who is a competitive athlete to see Dr. Berkson (regardless of the written reviews here). Our first appointment was 90 minutes long, the second appointment 20, then surgery, then easily 5 emergency pages by me or our athlete, off hours due to questions or problems. Then sending a photo of the complication, we were in the next day where we had to wait for the first time to see him. He solved the problem, off we went. There was a complication from the injury and we knew a second surgery would come pretty quick, and it has. At this point we've spent countless hours with him in office. He doesn't answer his phone, he doesn't rush us, on occasion we've been last of the day and stayed and talked sports injuries and different methods and treatments. On top, our athlete really likes him and he brings a sense of calm to the situation. The thought of never playing again has been a very real fear which Dr. Berkson has understood throughout. He is… a steady ship in rough seas. Oh, and his administrative assistant has never delayed on calling me back or anything of the nature. I know the check in process in Foxboro if that's where you go, MGH is much better for check in.

I went to see him for potential rotator cuff. He orders an X-ray which is ineffective . MRI is what you need to make a correct diagnoses in order to see the tissue damage . He comes in tells me I don't have arthritis.. Yes I know that. I have a rotator cuff tear . He tell me to put ice on it He is completely dismissive and acts like he is in a rush. What a waste of my time and insurance money.
