Dr. Eric Stanton Gerstenfeld, MD

I have been going to Scripps for over 10 years and have seen many doctors in that time in different departments and he's the worst doctor I have ever seen there. I was only able to ask a few questions and then he essentially just bolted out of the office not caring to help me. One example for how bad Eric is that I asked him what skin type I had (dry, oily, etc.), which is a crucial thing to know when you're dealing with acne, he didn't even answer the question, asking me what I thought. How am I supposed to know? He's the dermatologist. He wouldn't answer my question. His assistant told me over and over again after the doctor left the room that I should see a different doctor in the same department, so I'm figuring Eric's awfulness has been experienced by many others.

Took one quick look at white spots to diagnose Vitilago, without further tests. However, I went to a different doctor, who did further tests in a dark room which showed Vitilago being unlikely. Not sure why Dr. Eric did not do these tests when I visited him.

Be careful who you see. Some people put on a nice face, but ultimately solely care about money. I had a small cyst removed that he closed the wound edges for. I've had it done before prior to moving to California and the wound was left open and healed without issue, though it did leave a scar. Dr. Gerstenfeld decided that when he closed my wound, which was approx 1cm in size and depth, that he was was going to do 1 suture within the wound and then use suture to approximate the skin. By doing a separate "layer" of closing my skin (and what everyone needs to be aware of when seeing physicians) is it allows the doctor to bill your insurance for significantly more money for something that is not medically indicated and takes no extra time to them - it can actually labelled as malpractice/insurance fraud. It ended up sticking me with a bill that I did not anticipate and could not afford initially. I questioned Scripps, where I went to see him, about the charges and repeatedly was told they… reviewed my file, without actually providing any information. I refused to pay the bill without getting a thorough explanation. When I finally had someone actually give me details as to why it was billed that way I said fine, I will pay the bill even though his treatment was in bad taste, within 2 weeks I received a notice from Progressive Management Systems because his office had sent my debt to a collection agency to manage, to potentially ruin my credit. At the very least one would hope that by having over-treatment the skin would would look better than the prior cyst I had removed, but the wound he closed looks objectively worse than the one that was left to heal on its own. Be careful in general when you see doctors. Ask for a description of intended procedure beforehand and why things need to be done. Also, don't go to this guy.

I was a patient for many years until leaving the state a few years ago. I probably had 30 visits with Dr. G. over the years. On each one, he was friendly, efficient, compassionate and truly interested in my well-being. He was always aware of medical updates as they affected my care and took the time to answer all of my questions, without making me feel pressured. I've always rated physicians based upon what I perceived were their abilities and experience, without much regard to their personalities. With Dr. Gerstenfeld you get both: Qaulity medical care from a doctor you'll really like as a person.

If only I did not have to please with VA and Kaiser to visit Dr. Gerstenfeld.

I have been to other dermatologists, this doctor is weak. Spent very little time looking me over. I will try a new dermatologist.

he is an oustanding doctor who is knowlegeable and caring. altho very busy, he spends the appropriate time w/ patients

Went in to have a suspicious mole checked out by Dr. G. As a first time patient, I was anxious about my visit but found the reception staff friendly and helpful, the waiting room is pleasant and clean, the nurses are friendly and talkative, and Dr. G was great. He has an interested upbeat personality and listens to your concerns. My shave biopsy was quick and painless. Seriously, I didn't feel a thing, and I hate needles! I highly recommend Dr. G and the staff of West Dermatology.

He talks over you, does not listen when you do get to speak. Would not reccomend nor return. He could not diagnose the wound, gave some cream , which ...

So far so good. I got in regularly and if anyting looks suspicious it is gone! Zap. Great Doc.
