Dr. Erik Appel Cohen, MD

Dr. Cohen is a nice man but did not ever appear to be a good doctor. He seemed forgetful of what was discussed in previous visits. The only thing he knew how to do was look at what the blood lab work results looked like the last time he saw me. The last visit was the final straw. I arrived 10 min early and had to wait 20 minutes in line at the check in desk due to the long line of patience (this was not his fault) however, when I finally got in to see him, he literally was in and out of the room in less that 5 minutes and he pretty much stopped me from asking the few questions I had written down. The one important question I had was about maybe switching to a new brand of medication, he wouldn’t offer any alternatives and told me that I should ask the pharmacist if I can switch to something else. If we can’t rely on our doctors for advice or help improve our health then what is the point in seeing them. That visit was a waist of time and money. I paid over $150 for less than 5 minutes… of his time

Very happy with Dr, Cohen. I am tough on doctors, but Dr, Cohen has been great. Very attentive to concerns and issues. Never an alarmist, straight forward, and always with a great bedside manner.

I just read the other reviews and boy what a difference I had on the visit I brought my daughter too. Dr. Cohen, was very professional and courteous. He listened to all her issues with the super high dose of meds her general family doctor had her on for her diabetes. He agreed to start off FRESH with her and changed the meds plus also reduced the meds to the proper dosage for her situation. He was very concerned that we'd be able to afford the new type and offered us a RX discount card that might help. He called in the new meds for us and then verified they were there with another phone call and also located at a pharmacy close to us.. since we traveled over 70 miles to his office. I feel he is a great doctor... will upgrade to excellent after another visit .

This man should not be practicing medicine. That is the nicest thing I can say.

Was more interested in my marital status than health condition. Told me that since my family was overweight, I probably would be too!

Dr. Cohen barely talks to you about your illness and only reviews past lab results. Never asked about how I manage my diabetes, how I feel, or if I had any questions. He's in a rush to get you out, and seemed unsure on addressing the few questions I got in. Forget about him helping with individual treatment that this disease requires.

While I think he is knowledgeable and really appreciate his professional manner - I was truly disappointed that when running my yearly blood test, he neglected to also run labs for my Vitamin D and B12 levels. He agreed to, in office and in person, but when the results came in, those numbers were not in the lab results. When I phoned, he at first told me I had not requested those labs be done. I reminded him that we had indeed had a pretty lengthy conversation about it (I had a vitamin D deficiency last year at this time - and I am vegan so I always ask to check my B12); he had agreed to run them since the symptoms of both deficiencies can be similar to thyroid-issue symptoms, and I asked him to run them because it would help me figure out my current condition and rule out things. As we talked more on the phone, it became clear that his statement that I had not requested (and he had not agreed) to run these labs was completely disingenuous at best - because he then back tracked and… said that "a GP should get me those numbers, not an endocrine specialist." I asked him: why should I get a second blood test and have blood drawn a second time with another doctor if it is easy to have it done while getting my labs done with him? He then agreed only to do the D labs, but would not mail me a scrip to have it done in my area (I live one hour away.) He said I had to travel back to Albany and go to their labs because they "don't trust other lab results and it was their policy to do all labs in-house." I cannot make the trek back there just for a blood test and am personally disgusted any physician involved with a person's health and who is supposed to care about helping someone get well would have such policies. I am not returning to Dr. Cohen. They only reason I am not giving totally failing marks is because the staff was courteous, the office is pleasant and Mr. Cohen is reasonably kind - but I am not returning as I was disappointed by his disingenuousness and unfortunate policy that did not put my health first.

Fantastic doctor. Courteous, caring,extremely informative (and when he wasfinished explaning all he had to, he asked me if I had any other questions andactually waited and probed for an answer.Did not try to persuade me to take histreatment but spent 25 minutes with me tomake sure I understood everything.

If you like tough love, this is a good doctor to go to. He's good at answering questions and giving info, but you need to know what questions to ask. He doesn't spend more than a few minutes in the room with you, and he'll be quick to be negative about your A1C or weight results, even if you've slightly improved, but won't give you much feedback on improving either.
