Dr. Frank Joseph Piccioni, DO

I have been a patient since Dr. Piccioni opened his practice. And have seen him thru three of his office moves. In every one of his diagnosis, he has been right on. I have nothing but good things to say. And Yes I quit smoking and slowly been losing weight. He is well informed and stays up todate. One of the best!!!!!!

Like the other reviewers, I am currently looking for a new physician. Dr. Piccioni 's bedside manner can be seen as nothing less than opinionated. Each time you enter the office you are harassed regarding weight and smoking. My last visit he contributed the congestion in my chest to smoking and would not treat it. 3 days later I am in emergency care with walking pneumonia taking antibiotics and steroids for 3 weeks. If he is unfamiliar with a medication, he will send you to a specialist for more test irregardless of the fact you just had the test a few months back. Research and a call to the specialist would have been more cost effective for all involved. I have 3 chronic (no- cure) illnesses and the decisions he made could have had a significant long term affect on my health. I notified my insurance company who is assisting in helping me find a new physician.

After being a patient of Dr. Piccioni for 7 years, I am sad to say that I am now looking for another primary care physician. Personally he is a great guy and easy to talk to, but I agree with others here that he lets his personal feelings affect his treatment plans. If you smoke, drink, eat fast food, or don't exercise regularly he doesn't want to hear about any problems you have...you are going to end up with cancer or some other horrible disease and he makes sure he tells you that time and again. The daughter who runs the accounting dept (His wife and at least 3 of his daughters work there) is not nice at all and is the one who finds those billing codes. If you don't like lab work, don't go here....he wants blood work every 3 months and you will get another hefty bill from Labcorp because your insurance won't pay for it. When he is out of the office, he has his daughter cover for him, and I understand she is just like him....didn't even bother to make an appt. The last… straw for me was when I was experiencing horrible shoulder pain and was seeing a chiropractor (he doesn't like chiropractors). I asked him if I could get a prescription for pain medication (which I have NEVER asked for, so it' s not like I'm a druggie) and he told me to take Advil, get my flu shot, and schedule another fasting appt (which means more blood work). I am done.

Every visit he wants to know if I have quit smoking, if I have started a exercising plan. If I say no, he tells me I am going to die or that he thanks me and tell me I am paying for his kids college. By the time I leave there I am so depressed that it makes me cry.

They schedule appointments for you without telling you, then charge you for not showing up.

I have been a patient of Dr. Piccioni for 3 years. At first, it seemed he and his staff, (mostly family members)seemed very professional. Over the years, I have changed my mind. Dr. Piccioni's bed side manner is poor. He has very little eye contact with you and he sits at the computer typing his comments instead of devoting his attention on you. He might shake your hand but doesn't show much concern or interest in you other than the focus of your reason to be there. Very cut and dry, in and out...not at all personable. His office policies do not try to combine services to assist patients with time away from work and only having one to pay for one office visit. As a matter of fact, he is the first doctor I have gone to whose office charges an office visit anytime you are in there...even if it just to draw blood for labs....Plus if you wish to use your credit card to pay copays or the bill, his office charges you an additional $2.00 added to your copay. Although, he may be within… his "rights" to charge....it just confirms in my mind that if he can find a code in the medical coding he is gonna use and charge you. Recently, I was told that the nurse would be drawing my blood, but the person who did it had on a lab coat with Bio Lab printed on the coat. When I asked the front desk whether or not she was an RN, I was told they did not know her credentials. Rather odd to not know the credentials of an employee, treating patients and doing services that one should be licensed to do. I felt like she was not telling me the truth. I am very unsatisfied with the caliber of this office and of Dr. Piccioni's seeming desire to suck as much out of the patient and insurances as they can find a code to do.

I agree with everyone that he is a wonderful man and a good family doctor. He is almost "old school" in his warm, bedside manner and his genuine regard for the community. In fact, I have been a patient of his since I was a young adolescent, and he was very concerned for me during some tough times. It was only when I went away to college that I realized that perhaps my childhood dream doc wasn't all he's cracked up to be. You have to remember, he's Catholic, and has a pretty traditional sense of family morality. I guess what it comes down to, to put it bluntly, is that he's not very progressive when it comes to issues of sexual health. The one time I did come to him with a problem regarding my sexual health, he referred me to a "women's health" center that ended up being very OB (read: baby) centric, and was very judgmental and unprofessional when it came to matters of sexual health that to not pertain to virtuous motherhood. I learned this the hard way, and it was not until I… visited an actual gynecologist at the UVa Medical Center did it even occur to me that doctors' human prejudices might affect the treatment of the people who trust them and need them most--their patients. When it comes down to it, Dr. Piccioni is a good man with a big heart, knowledgeable to a certain extent, but really only good for a certain type of care. Not for everyone, but perfect for some.
