Dr. Franklin Owen Black

I am just so sorry to find out this very kind dr has passed. I had an earache and went to an ent in the medical bldg where i worked. He sent me out with a script for ear drops. This was on a thursday. Friday morning i woke up to a flaming red ear and the pain was horrendous. I called the ent i had seen but he couldnt see me until the following tuesday. There was no way i could wait that long. So i looked up EAR and PORTLAND and Black was the first listing. I called and explained what was going on. Dr Black didnt see patients on Fridays.....but they would check with him. And he saw me. I had a burned ear canal and a blister on my ear drum. He stood there and looked thru his huge book and then came up with a medicine actually meant for eyes. it took a fews months for my ear to heal and i cannot describe how it hurt. I was having some pain and called his office on a thursday. He should have been in because he does research on fridays, right? But nope. He was in florida for a… conference or something. Saturday morning i get a call in the morning. Its dr black. He hadnt left town yet and was on his way to the airport and was listening to his messages. If i hurried he would meet me at his office and look at it. I got there and sat in the hallway until he came. He unlocked the door, we went into the exam room. He checked my ear, took care of the pain. charged me $25 and sent me on my way and he went to florida. Now how awesome is that???? So i have an earache the other day and my pc sends me to an ent who prescribes an eardrop. NO WAY NO HOW. and i googled dr black and find out he passed two years ago. And then i actually see just how fortunate i was to be his patient. What a wonderful unassuming man. And i knew he was a genius before i read it! Rest in peace Dr Black

Dr. Black did what no doctor in 2 years could do for my husband. It was not an easy journey and he can be very direct but if you followed his advice without making excuses he got the job done and correctly. I was sad to learn of his passing.

Dr. Black was and continues to be the most disrespectful and rude person/doctor I have ever encountered. I have a rare problem with my vestibular system. It takes a special doctor to diagnose and help with the issue. Dr. Black is one of the few doctors in the world that work on such medical issues. If it weren't for this caveat I would NOT see Dr. Black. Dr. Black clearly has an issue with women who are over weight. His first comment to me, literally, was, you should lose some weight! It was disgusting and ridiculous. I lost my ability to stand and he was telling me I should lose weight. Yes, he promotes the zone diet because one facet of his care is proper diet but that is a far cry from his lose weight comment. He's an older gentleman and perhaps sketicism has crept in. It's unfortunate Dr. Black's bedside manner is so tremendously poor because there are so many of us that need his expertise to get our lives back. His staff is overworked and seriously brow beaten by his… demands and personality flaws! He doesn't have enough staff to maintain his patient load. I do hope Dr. Black mentors some young and up and coming doctors so that he can retire and still fill the void in the vestibular world.
