Dr. Frederick Samuel Nuss, MD

This guy is a quack. Should have his license pulled. 1 star is 1,000 times better than he deserves.

Worst doctor ever. I was ambulanced to Des Moines for gallbladder removal. The films went with me (in an envelope laid on my tummy during transport). I handed them personally to the hospital staff. He said there weren't any so he needed to redo the films. He kept me NPO on morphine for 4 days while he tried to decide if he was going to perform surgery on me or not. He said, "if you had come to me at my office instead of the emergency room like you should have, I would have sent you home with a diet." On Thursday the transport team came to take me to surgery, the nurses weren't even aware that I was to be transported. I requested that they wait until my husband got there, they told me I would have to talk to the doctor about that. When I told the doctor I wanted to see my husband first, he said "that has been taken care of". He immediately had anesthesia begin putting me under for surgery. I woke up in my room. My husband was there and he said the doctor called him and told him not to… bother coming to the hospital "it would all be over before he got there". He sent me home the next day. He never visited me at the hospital after the surgery. At my follow-up appointment he said "you were a sick girl, your gallbladder was gangrene." He gave me no prescriptions for postop surgery and none after the follow-up. I have been experiencing medical problems since that surgery and no one seems to have an answer as to why. He obviously didn't even recognize gangrene when he saw it or he would have told be before discharge from the hospital, wouldn't he? Worst doctor in the world. He even cut my wedding ring off my finger because I had worn it for 35 years and it wouldn't come off. This was 14 years ago. I filed a complaint with the hospital at the time, but never heard back from anyone. I wish I had known there was a place to post a public review a long time ago. I gave him 1 star simply because submitting a review without a star wasn't possible.

Very unprofessional; extremely strange sense of "humor" and bedside manner. I had complications following my laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. I had bile leaking into my abdomen and ended up back in the hospital a week later. They could get the bile controlled with stents and drains but not stopped. He insisted it was because I was too fat and not moving enough ("Food makes us fat. Exercise makes us healthy.") I was up exercising as much as they would allow but when he would make his daily rounds, it was always "You need to be up and moving more. Food makes us fat. Exercise makes us healthy." No amount of exercise was going to take care of the problem. I finally made the decision on my own to leave Iowa Methodist after five days and headed up to Mayo Clinic where they did major surgery to fix the problem. I also had a collapsed lung after he removed my gallbladder, which he didn't tell me about (I learned about it in the records that were sent to Mayo). Very strange man. I wouldn't… send my worst enemy to him.

This man is the most arrogant person I have ever met. I wouldnâ??t let him touch me, or any member of my family. He treats everyone around him as if they are 2yr olds.

I was referred to Dr. Nuss to have my gallbladder removed. I noted on my in take sheet that I had been diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder. During my visit he never mentioned it. I had to bring it to his attention. I was concerned about blood clots after my surgery. He did not feel that I needed to be treated with any blood thinners. After my surgery my parents talked to him about their concerns with the blood clotting disorder given the fact that blood clots can be common after gallbladder surgery. He gave my parents a lecture about cigarette smoking. After my mother stated that none of us are smokers he went on to say that he and I had decided i did't need to worry about the blood thinner after the surgery. He said that I just needed to get up and walk around and not lay around and I should be ok. I followed those instructions. Two weeks later I suffered a pulmonary embolism and had a blood clot in my leg. Spent the night in the hospital and was started on blood thinner. The… ER Dr. wondered why I had not been given some kind of blood thinner after the surgery. During my surgery follow up appointment with Dr. Nuss I informed him of what had happened. He gave me a lecture on smoking(I don't smoke). He told me I probably shouldn't skip my meds anymore. There were no meds to skip. I wasn't on any. He checked my incisions and sent me on my way. I was furious. I would not recommend him to anyone.

I had a horrible experience with this provider. I was seen in the ER and needed to have my gallbladder removed. He refused to do surgery because I was pregnant and he failed to provide me with appropriate instructions for nutrition and proper pain medications after refusing to operate. I ended back up in the ER again 2 days later and was precluded from seeing any other general surgeons in Methodist since I had already seen him. He again refused to re-admit me for pain control or operate on me. I had to find another practice group to admit and treat me. He would agree to operate on me if I terminated the pregnancy. However, he did not want to take the risk to his statistics of operating on me while in the early stages of my pregnancy. He also refused to provide any assistance to help me find another provider who would evaluate and possible treat me. We still had a patient doctor relationship and I believe it was his duty to assist me with finding another reputable surgeon to obtain an… opinion from since he would not treat me and all his partners were precluded from treating me. I hope no one else ever has to go through this experience again. I believe he should be disciplined.

Condescending, treated me like a dimwitted child, insisted the problem I reported wasn't possible, was only interested in maintaining that the surgery I had four days before was not responsible for the problem, not a whit interested in solving the problem. Told me all I needed was reassurance, not tests. Much worse than no help.

Dr. Knuss treated me like a 5-year-old and didn't even listen to my questions or concerns. He wasn't willing to do any testing to diagnose me - I practically had to force him. I told him what I thought was wrong, and after him basically telling me that it wasn't possible, the test results came back...and I was right! I would NEVER recommend making an appointment with Dr. Knuss.

Dr. Nuss was not helpful at all. In fact, he completely talked down to me and acted as if I was ridiculous for even making an appointment/being concerned about my particular health issue. I was recommended to go see him through my regular doctor - I am going to call and tell her to NEVER recommend anyone to him in the future!
