Happy Thanksgiving By Dr. Glenn R. Foreman
Who’s pumped for Thanksgiving? I know I am. I know I usually write about issues related to health and cosmetic dentistry but today I’m writing about the holiday that means a lot to me and a lot of things to different people – it means seeing friends and family, having our traditional turkey dinner and of course, watching football.
Here are some interesting facts about Thanksgiving:
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade began in 1924 in New York City and is the second oldest parade in America, tied with America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit. Philadelphia has an older parade, originally known as Gimbel’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, then the 6abc Boscov’s Thanksgiving Parade, and now the 6abc IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade.
88% of Americans eat turkey on Turkey Day. Around 20% of America’s turkeys – 46 million – are eaten on Thanksgiving Day alone. That works out to about 736 million pounds of turkey for Thanksgiving alone!
Americans eat over 400 million pounds of cranberries each year. 80 million pounds of that are during Thanksgiving week alone – meaning about 20% of America’s cranberries are eaten during Thanksgiving.
Benjamin Franklin believed the turkey should be the national bird of America. He wrote disparagingly of the bald eagle, saying about the turkey: “For the truth the Turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America.”
Thanksgiving football goes back to 1876, when the Intercollegiate Football Association held its championship on Thanksgiving Day.
The first NFL Thanksgiving Day game was held in 1920, when the Akron Pros routed the Canton Bulldogs 7-0.
There are three cities around the country which take the name turkey: Turkey, Texas; Turkey Creek; Louisiana; and Turkey, North Carolina.
But there is a deeper meaning to Thanksgiving. Gratitude. Giving thanks is one of the easiest and most rewarding virtues we can cultivate – just two simple words brings out the best in us – let’s be honest, there’s nothing like saying “Thank You” and really meaning it.
As Americans, we have so much to be thankful for. I know this Thanksgiving, from every corner of my being, I’m going to give thanks for my Family, my Friends, my Great Patients, my Staff and the Men and Woman that fight for our country and our freedom.
I hope you and your family have a Safe & Happy Thanksgiving.
