Dr. Gregory Ostrow, MD

Two of my children (3 and 8) saw Dr Ostrow. He said both of them did not need glasses for their astigmatism after both failed an eye test. The older child had 2 previous high quality doctor’s recommend glasses for him because his eyes were so bad. I did not trust his opinion plus he had a horrible bedside manner and was the worst pediatric doctor we had ever seen. After these appointments, we went to Shiley and saw two different doctors for each child within 6 months. They both recommended glasses for my kids and my youngest had one eye so bad that she needed patching.

This doctor and office lacks compassion, knowledge and bedside manner. Do you yourself a favor and just find another physician rather than deal with the headache of this physician and his support staff.

My child was born with a little spot on his left eye. My wife and I were very concerned about it. Dr Ostrow and his amazing staff in Carmel Valley treated us like royalty. I would have expected most Drs to just look at this quickly and say “don’t worry about it” but he did a comprehensive exam for everything! He reassured us...he loves working with kids and it is evident he was chosen for this. Thank you Doc!

I wanted to write this review to tell parents out there that your child condition can improve with the right doctor and if you adamantly follow through with the direction and guidelines of the doctor who has seen results. My daughter was seen by Kaiser Pediatric Ophthalmologist for a year before I brought her to Dr. Ostrow, and I am very very satisfied with my decision. I had Kaiser insurance but decided to take her to Dr. Ostrow. She was 4.5 at the time. . I was devastated to learn that my daughter is legally blind in one eye. She was perfect (20/20) in the other. I had her check annually at her pediatric doctor but they miss the diagnosed maybe because she had perfect vision in one eye. Guess they forgot to examine each eye separately. From a family with medical background and my younger sister in optometry school, I was lead to many decision, including vision therapy. My daughter did not improve with the treatment from Kaiser pediatric ophthalmologist. She was told to… patch for 6 hours a day, then 8 hours. I was sadden and looked every where for other treatment. Patching and doing vision therapy at home too. None of this is effective, slight improvement seen. But not dramatic improvement. My daughter was very compliant and this helps alot. Transferring over to Dr. Ostrow, he immediately told me to have her patch full time. Morning till she sleeps. My daughter was such a compliant person, very proud of her. She patched full time, even on vacation. and in the first full month of complete patching, she went from 400 to 125/20. And now she is down to 40/20 and was able to see Big 3D (just after 3months of fulltime patching). My recommendation to parents with similar situation is patch full time. Keep doing it no matter what. Have them draw, write, do homework in the morning while patching (This is the visual therapy they need and doesn't cost a fortune). Morning patching is important. Complete patching will see the biggest result, but must engage them in active writing, drawing, coloring). However, the side effect of patching that I notice with my daughter is reflection problem or slight dyslexia. She tends to write 6/9, b, d, and even 3's backward. She recognized that she did it wrong, but would unconsciously do it. But I would still patch her because she can see at 35/20. that is a big improvement. She is now 6.5 and and is at 25/20, and sometimes switch back to 40/25. This is because after her big improvement, I got lazy and did not patch her or put her on her glasses everyday, like I was supposed too! But I will from now on, her dyslexia is still there, sometimes she writes 81, instead of 18 too. I hope it is just the eye and neuron connection during child development that is causing the problem and hopefully this side effect would go away as she ages. I strongly recommend Dr. Ostrow for children with amblyopia. He is enthusiastic, passionate, and knows what he is doing because he has seen results. You need to see a doctor who has seen great results with their treatment.

Dr Ostrow did my lazy eye surgery last month and I couldn't be more happy. I wish I had found him years ago. Surgery was a little painful but my eye looks great now and he is a great doctor.

Absolutely the most compassionate doctor I've ever met. Highly recommend him.

We have had to see a number of doctors and he is by far, the best caring, knowledgeable physician we have met. We are thankful.

I went to see a few Doctors in the past 10 years about my problem with strabismus and double vision and I was told by all of them that it will be hard to find a Doctor that would agree to do a surgery and also that I could also risk losing my current vision. After having several visits to different Vision Specialist, I was referred to Dr. Ostrow. I was very nervous at first but after visiting Dr. Ostrowâ??s office, the whole staff was very nice and very professional. Dr. Ostrow immediately recommended my surgery and there is no words to express my gratitude to Dr. Ostrow. He did an amazing job and he change my life completely. Now I have straight eyes!!! I was not in any pain at all even though he did both eyes and I had past scar tissues that he also removed. He was very positive and very patient with me and he really encourage me to asked all the necessary questions in which he was very specific and I was able to have all the answers I needed to know. I really recommend Dr.… Ostrow, he is excellent!!!

I first met Dr. Ostrow with my 4 year old for her eye crossing (which only needed glasses but we might have to patch her weak eye). He saw my eye crossing at that visit and three months (and a surgery) later I have straight eyes for the first time in my life. Two happy patients.
