Dr. Gretchen Marie Fermann, MD

I left my appointment with Dr. Fuhrman feeling dismissed, unheard, and disappointed. I scheduled this visit because I'm struggling with perimenopausal symptoms after a hysterectomy. I still have my ovaries, and I already know my estrogen levels are very high. One of my biggest concerns has been consistently elevated blood pressure, with my diastolic pressure often over 100. My primary care physician suggested that hormonal changes associated with perimenopause could be contributing and recommended I discuss it with my gynecologist. When I brought this up, Dr. Fuhrman responded by asking, "What would high blood pressure have to do with menopause?" She then stated that it had "absolutely nothing to do with it." I questioned that because my doctor had told me otherwise, but she remained adamant. I later confirmed through reputable medical sources that hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can, in fact, contribute to increased blood pressure in many women. Regardless of… differing opinions, I expected a discussion, not an outright dismissal. Throughout the appointment, I felt that my concerns were minimized. Despite discussing my elevated estrogen levels and my long history of ovarian cysts, my symptoms were brushed aside. I've dealt with painful ovarian cysts for over 20 years, so being told they were simply "normal" did not reflect my medical history or experience. The only treatment option presented to me was birth control. I explained that I have previously experienced significant side effects from hormonal birth control, including weight gain, emotional changes, and cystic acne, and that I was not interested in taking it again. Rather than discussing alternatives, I was told that birth control was my only option. I was disappointed that other possible approaches were never explored or even discussed. Every patient deserves to feel heard, respected, and included in decisions about their healthcare. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. I left feeling discouraged rather than helped, and I will not be returning or recommending this provider.

I have been with Dr Fermann for several years now and have recommended her to my daughter. Both of us have had surgical procedures and we both felt we were in very competent hands.

Dr. Fermann is very thorough. She is always willing to give her time to listen and answer questions.

I have seen Dr. Fermann only a few of times in the past five years. Overall she was pleasant and spent an appropriate amount of time with me. However, during a procedure when I was experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort, I could have used a reassuring gesture or kind word. I was very disappointed that Dr. Fermann never even acknowledged my uncomfortable situation. As a result, I will likely look for a new ob/gyn.

I've been with Dr. Ferman for about 5 years now, and have never had any issues. She's very informative, understanding, and takes the time to explain things to me and answer my questions. The office staff is very helpful and getting an emergency appointment isn't a problem, it might just not be at the time you ideally want, but it is short notice and you can get in. Office is comfortable and in a nice building. I would suggest her to anyone and everyone.
