Dr. Guy Kiyoshi Hirayama, MD

We Like Dr. Guy as do the kids. He has experience.

We went for our sports annual and he was condecending and unkind. He made my child uncomfortable about his appearance, and frightened him about the dangers of Maui as we are new to the island. He told my son his belly was too big and then made him sit with his shirt off for the remainder of the appointment. When he tried to put it back on, as my son was embarrassed now, he told him to hand it to me. Then the doctor went on a 10 minute explitive on tsunamis, followed by a gruesome shark attack account. My ocean loving son, who had extensive ocean safety information prioir to this doctor visit was then afraid to go to the beach. Overall, awful experience.

Dr. Hirayama is a very nice Doctor and if you're a parent who doesn't question anything a doctor tells you then he will be okay. If you are a parent who is concerned about what a doctor puts into your child though then he's not so very nice and passively threatening. I asked a question about some of the vaccines that would be injected and he responded by giving me the point by points of how irresponsible I would be as a parent and to choose wisely. The following visit we were prescribed antibiotics. I asked a question about other alternatives. He said that I was borderline non-compliant and in some worst case scenarios were parents are not compliant, they would call child services and the police and gave the point by point of vaccines again. Which I didn't even mention. I'm sure he didn't really mean it in that sort of way, but it sure sounded that way. Anyway we decided a different pediatrician would be more willing to be informative and understanding.
