Dr. Henry Merola, MD

This review is not about a visit but rather about a specific situation connected to the office. My daughter became Dr. Merola's patient after New Year's because she is in college in the area and needed a local doctor for whatever may arise medically while she is at school, particularly in case of an urgent need. Such an urgent need came a few days ago when she experienced a herpes flare-up. It happens infrequently and we normally have some meds at home but this was a very atypical situation. It came at the worst possible time since she was leaving for Europe in a day from NYC for her flight and was neither in Waltham nor at home. Relying on Dr. Merola's office as my daughter's primary we called them and requested a prescription for a basic medication that treats herpes. This usually means about a three-day supply of an inexpensive generic brand. In my daughter's case, if we get it early enough, the issue is gone in a few days. If left untreated, it would linger for 3-4 months! For… two days we begged them to send in the prescription to a CVS in NYC to only get on day 2 "You need to come to an appointment". Really? 200 miles away and leaving for Europe the next day? If this does not constitute an urgent need, what does? The office just would not want to view this situation outside of the box! They suggested going to an urgent care facility. In the end, we did just that. Waited for two hours to see someone for about 5 minutes and get the much-needed prescription. Reading many reviews that complain about long waits for the appointment in the actual office, I guess we did not miss much. However, the way this was handled could only be described as poor, lacking any empathy toward the patient and understanding of a particular situation. Needless to say, we won't be back in Dr. Merola's office.

Good Doc, saw me with no appointment, thought I had that COVID-but didn't! Didn't have to wait long (10-15 minutes) and answered all my questions. Wasn't buried in the computer. Nice staff, clean office.

The Doc is really knowledgeable and doesn't rush the visit. Also not so consumed with the computer during the visit. Didn't have to wait that long either. Would go back.

This is by far the worst experience I have ever had with any doctor. I had been sick for months and finally made an appointment with a doctor. He was covered by my insurance and had mostly good reviews, so I made an appointment. I showed up 15 minutes early for my appointment at noon. By 1:15, there was still at least one patient to be seen ahead of me. I asked the receptionist and she repeated what she had been saying to all those waiting - that it would just be a few more minutes. I had a meeting at 3:30, so at 2:00 pm (two hours after my scheduled appointment) I left and asked the receptionist to shred my new patient paperwork. She said ok and I left. Imagine my surprise when I recieved a bill for over $300. I called the office and explained the mistake. The person who answered the phone said they could not help me and they would pass the message on to the doctor. I then have proceeded to call the office almost ten times. I have heard nothing. This entire experience was SO… unprofessional. Even if Dr. Henry Merola is like the best doctor ever, because of the horrible communication and transparency, I would still warn folks to avoid this office and avoid this man.

My experience was very good. I was really sick with something. I was able to book the apt night before and even able to change the time that morning. All appts and changes can be done online, which is great if your life is busy like mine. This was a little wait about 15-20 minutes, which I expected, but no 1-2 hours like an urgent care or ER. The Doc was really nice and knowledgeable. He answered all questions and never rushed me. But the best part is everything is done online. Even your labs have a portal. I would definitely recommend this Doc, he seems to take most insurances too.

Worst place office ever impacting medical care. Overcrowded, no callbacks, interrupted office visits, no referrals multiple web sites, rushed always. Good doctor being impacted by his horrible office.
