DR Carter did an excellent job of informing me of the many choices that I had and recommended what he felt was the best choice for me. He couldn't have been more helpful and all went well.

We had anticipated the 'experience of a lifetime' at the Johns Hopkins office of Dr. H. Ballantine Carter. A taxi, paid for by Johns Hopkins, delivered us to the appropriate door at the JH Medical Center. The professional efficiency of the JH staff was exemplary. They set the standard by which other hospitals ought to be measured. Our appointment was for 2:00 PM, and that is when we were guided into the examination room where we were to meet with Dr. Carter.About ten minutes later, Dr. Carter came into the room. A gentleman of about 55 years, 510, stone-faced and very professional. After a few questions, most of which confirmed the thinking that he had read none of the material that his office demanded we send prior to the appointment, he asked that my wife leave the room while he examined me. (The previous Sunday we spent about an hour completing three questionnaires online as requested by Hopkins; it was clear from his questions to me in the exam room that he had not reviewed… them.)I will say that Dr. Carter is very practiced in the art of the digital exam of the prostate gland. Hes the best I have experienced. That, together with the usual fondling of my private area and my dutifully rendering a manful cough after turning my head to the left (to check hernia), was the extent of his exam. A few minutes later he left the room and asked his assistant to bring my wife back to the room.My wife reentered the room, and we awaited the return of Dr. Carter. Perhaps another five minutes passed, and he then came into the room to announce that my Gleason Score indicated that he could not tell us that surgery would cure my cancer. Your mom advised him that we had had the biopsy slides from the our local hospital Fedexed to Hopkins. He checked the computer and determined that the Pathology lab at Hopkins performed an analysis on the specimens from the biopsy with the same results as our home hospital. He then recommended that we retain a top-notch radiologist to commence radiation therapy concomitant with hormone therapy to block production of testosterone. He asked if we had questions whereupon we asked if he could recommend a center or radiation oncologists with whom we might consult. He responded that he could not do so, this in spite of the fact that the book written by the head or former head of Urology at Hopkins references the research and opinions of radiation oncologists at Hopkins. All together, we believe that we had taken a total of less than twenty minutes of his professional time, ten of which were face-time.He arose from his chair and handed me the appropriate documentation to deliver to the billing clerk as we exited the urology area. We left feeling that we had not been taken seriously or served well by Dr. Carter.
