I am a firm believer in preventive medicine. I had no problem with my heart that I was aware of. However, my mother had heart disease in her Mitra valve. I decided to see a heart specialist. Much to my surprise he said I had a bad leak in my Mitra valve. I took an electrocardiograph that confirmed his opinion and that I also needed tricuspid valve repair. I needed lifesaving surgery! This was one operation that I needed the best surgeon there is! After very careful research I selected Dr. Takayama. I am sooooooo glad I did! He repaired my valves 100% and gave me a new lease on life! At a hospital in NJ my family was told that I might night make it through the night, but if I did, they would decide what to do with me in the morning. Thanks go out to my cardiologist for finding Dr. Takayama! I was transported to NYP-Colombia at 3 in the morning and surgery started soon after. Dr. Takayama had to replace my aorta and aortic graft that had been installed 27 years previous. Now it is almost 6 years later and I am still ticking like a fine Swiss watch. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience. Dr. Takayama and his surgical team did great job, evidenced by the speed of my healing/recovery to date and the remarkably modest levels of pain I experience both while in the hospital and since being released. The quality of care I received in the hospital was excellent at all levels. My only real complaint was that the patient I was sharing the room with was a bit of a pain in the butt (non-stop complaining and squawking the entire time). Not much anyone could have done about that. I view the cardiac unit at Columbia Presbyterian to be a world class organization and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you to you all.

Before I saw Dr.Takayama I met with two other surgeons in the New York area and they recommended that I have my valve replaced. Dr.Takayama offered a valve sparing procedure. Considering I am only 50 years old he probably saved me at least 2 more open heart surgeries. So I underwent a valve sparing aortic root replacement also known as the David procedure. Everything went great. I was out of the hospital in 5 days. Dr.Takayama was excellent. He has outstanding bedside manner. I am grateful to this man. highly recommend him.
