Dr. Howard Kirschen, MD

Knows his medications, and has good insight into human behavior.

In a field where very few doctors accept insurance, Dr. Kirschen is a rare find. He will see a patient who is in crisis on a walk in basis even though he is fully booked. He takes the time to really talk to his patient and answers any questions or concerns. He is not in it for the money, as so many other psychiatrists are.

Dr. K is very compassionate, open-minded and fast at understanding exactly what your issues are. I felt like he could read my mind, he is very observant & a wise, gentle man. Had I not seen him I don't know where I'd be today. I have respect for his experience.

He's a very good doctor, but in the event of emergencies, there is no way to get in touch with him. Unfortunately, emergencies do happen in the world of psychiatry, and I feel like his patients have no options except to go to the hospital. I have no idea where he admits patients, which would be nice to know. He does give you the option of emergency visits, but sometimes all it takes is a phone call to solve a problem.

The staff have gotten better - I think he got the point. The doctor is very good, very caring and right on target when it comes to meds and therapies. Yes, the staff situation does annoy me sometimes, but he's been so good to me, that I would rather stay with him than find another psychiatrist who is just in it for the big bucks. So many of them don't take insurance, or participate in Medicare/Medicaid.

Does not respond to phone calls or faxes from the pharmacy or patient,if you don't work around his schedule your ignored.

Dr. Kirschen is the psychological equivalent of a "Dr. House." Not only does he have great creds, but his *insight* is remarkable. I've had more than one instance where his diagnosis was quick and spot on. Best of all, it's apparent he loves his work.

Calls are not answered and voicemail messages are not returned. It is almost impossible to get in touch with the doctor or any member of the staff. Additionally, promised to refill prescriptions and complete forms are not fulfilled.While the doctor himself is good at what he does, its not worth the trouble dealing with the office staff.
