Dr. Howard Antony RIIna, MD

Dr. Howard Riina is a very talented and experienced neuro-vascular surgeon who recently saved my life. Dr. Riina successfully coiled a growing unruptured aneurysm that probably would have ruptured in the near future, causing me debililitating consequences, or even death. It's amazing how delicate these neuro vascular procedures are when dealing with fragile aneurysms. With these complicated neuro vascular procedures, comes great risk to the patient, and I'm very thankful Dr. Riina was my surgeon. I'm also appreciative NYU Medical Center has the finest, cutting edge neuro-brain surgical technology required for the surgeries. Sometimes people don't realize how lucky we are to live near NYC, and have access to the finest surgeons, and other doctors in the world !

Dr. Riina performs both endovascular and craniotomy procedures. I trusted him for the best approach for my difficult case of an unruptured aneurysm in a rare place-PICA. He was the last of six surgeons I consulted and the only one that gave me the option of a minimally invasive pipeline stent that others said was not possible or would not occlude my aneurysm completely. He believed that a craniotomy or the coiling procedures that others had offered me would leave me with either a stroke or the inability to swallow. I took a chance and went with him and I am so grateful that I did. I am now four years out and my most recent MRA shows that my aneurysm is completely gone and has been ever since my six month fillow-up. I have recommended others to this very talented surgeon..

Over the past year and a half, Dr. Riina has performed four surgeries, including a craniotomy, on my mother. He interrupted his vacation to perform the first surgery (and we are not celebrities or major donors to the hospital). When my mother ended up needing another major surgery (unrelated to her neurological issues), he even visited her in the hospital. Dr. Riina possesses a rare combination of confidence, brilliance and compassion. His nurse, Liz, has also been unbelievably responsive, knowledgable and caring. We are truly blessed.

Dr Riina operated on me under very difficult condition. I was transport form up state NY for a bleed in the brain Dr. Riina and his staff was waiting for me as I arrived. Granted, Howard Riina may have saved some lives. But be sure to ask him the impact he has on the lives of his patients and their families when he makes a mistake. One year ago, a friend of mine arrived for surgery for a "routine" coiling operation on an aneurysm. He was left in a vegetative state because Dr. Riina (or one of his associates - we have yet to get a straight story) "lost" a coil and then had the retrieving device break off in his brain, causing a series of strokes. Now, my friend is suffering in a long-term care facility and his wife has been left all but destitute because of the costs incurred because of Dr. Riina's "mistake".And, by the way, his office is not all that forthcoming when it comes to providing the medical records and reports from the botched surgery. Keep this in mind before you let this butcher near you or one of your loved ones.

Had a difficult stent and coiling with Dr. Riina. 6 months later my MRI looks fine & I feel great. Highly recommend.

Make sure you have your will up to date before seeing this butcher. He left my friend nearly brain-dead after a "routine" coiling procedure. Be sure to ask Riina how many previous healthy patients he left in a minimally conscious state after surgery.
