Dr. Hussam Mihtar, MD

I have been going to Dr. Mihtar for about 18 years. He is excellent Doctor. I came to him when I was very down. He helped me Through out the years to overcome my episodes

I deal with issues of grief regarding heartbreak with my ex on top of depression, the former being the most recent precedent issue. In addition to being always 15-20 minutes late on my appointment time, he prescribed me one medication for weeks that made me jittery, shakey, tense, speak in a panic, and feel panicked and said that I'm sensitive to medication and it'll take time to get used to it but that I would... I didn't. New psychiatrist put me on a medication with less side effects and at an equivalent dosage and asked, "why didn't your previous psychiatrist put you on this instead?" The worse and final straw for me was when I was updating him on an experience regarding the source of my grief finding someone new, he decided to postulate 1) that perhaps my source of grief wasn't being sexually satisfied by me, 2) my source of grief is "still a young woman" so naturally she would want to have more sex and 3) The best way to get over somebody is to be under somebody. I was angry… and sickened and never want to see this person again.

When I used the services of UCSD in the 1990s, Dr. Mihtar is the psychiatrist that stands out above the others that I saw. He took time to understand my problems and work on solutions. I remember him telling me that he wanted to stay in the field of psychiatry, whereas other doctors I saw wanted to get into other fields such as research. He genuinely cares.
