Dr. Irene Charalabos Souter, MD

The summary: the care here is seriously negligent. Don’t come here. I wish I had read these reviews earlier. Turns out lots of patients feel how I felt - completely uncared for and very confused. You are not able to get any medical care unless you do a standardized set of tests and invasive imaging, regardless of if you need them or not, for insurance purposes. My experience: Dr Souter seemed nice enough during our first appointment. But the first red flag was that the appointment ended without her asking me a SINGLE question about why I was visiting a fertility clinic....I tried to squeeze my question in and received a highly dismissively response. In the months that followed, I never heard again from the doctor. And yet, I was sent in for labs and more labs and invasive tests without ever once being told what they were for. Of course I tried to ask but just got message responses from a series of uncoordinated nurses (Pamela, Regan, and others). Believe it or not, I never even… got any messages from the doctor after having my miscarriage, nor any instructions or reassurance. Throughout the testing I asked over and over again to talk to the doctor and kept being told that she would call me after I got all my tests. However after one particularly invasive procedure I asked more insistently about why I needed that test and was told it was an insurance requirement for IVF. I WAS NOT SEEING THE DOCTOR FOR IVF. The staff pushed on me a procedure I didn’t need because they seriously don’t know the difference between their patients and what patients wanted. I finally spoke to the doctor. She told me that she doesn’t offer any medical care AT ALL until you get a series of tests that every single patient gets, including highly invasive imaging. Doesn’t matter why you’re there. I contacted an ob gyn friend living in another state, and she told me to run in the opposite direction. I switched doctors after this. So much wasted time. Save yourself the confusion and the pain and don’t come here.

There is not an appointment that goes by where Dr. Souter or someone from the MGH team doesn’t express a genuine kindness, as we go through this uniquely, stressful process: a reassuring smile, a kind voice, a hug, a story, an extra minute to answer a question they’ve probably answered a hundred times before, a heartfelt ‘I’m sorry it didn’t work this time’ or shared joy when it does. I feel very lucky to have this wonderful team behind me.

Dr. Souter met with us for about 10 minutes during our first appointment. She did not explain the IVF process and simply shuttled us to her nurse, Pam, who was a walking disaster. She explained nothing, was convoluted and honestly, an idiot. Dr. Souter did not ask if we had questions and we had to tell her to stop, sit back down and answer our questions. She may be a good physician clinically, but clearly has NO IDEA how patient care works. Her staff in inept which is surprising given how complex a process of IVF and GPD can be. Don't go here.

Don’t go here... enough said

I did not have a good experience with Dr. Souter. She explained absolutely nothing. We went from an appt where it was confirmed we’d need IVF, to a phone call with instructions on prescriptions and an appt for my first scan. My protocol was never never communicated to us, discussed or explained. The IVF process was never discussed (everything we learned, we learned from google). No information was provided on how to do shots. When the first round didn’t work, again it was barely addressed and nothing was explained. I asked for an appt and got a rushed 2 minute iphone call instead. And then...again...I got a phone call out of the blue and I was again no given no information, just a list of meds to start my next cycle. I was once again given no explanation or input into my protocol, which I’d clearly communicated I wanted. In my 1.5 years with Dr. Souter, I spend ~30 min with her over two appts and two rushed phone calls. She’s a terrible communicator who explains… nothing and doesn’t care about her patients. It felt like a factory. We were eventually successful and never heard a word from her. She couldn’t take 10 seconds out of her day to say congratulations after all we went through, and all the money she earned from us. Terrible doctor.

I found Souter to be rude and inaccurate. She led us down a very convaluted path and just kept bringing us back for follow up after follow up. Dismissive, after 6 miscarriages and many problems told me not to worry, just make a follow up. Lacked compassion of any sort. Requesting medical records and looking for a new doctor.

Dr. Souter combined an exceptionally high professional acumen with a warm, positive bedside manner. We are forever grateful to her. We had a horrible experience at Waltham Boston IVF but Dr Souter and the entire staff at MGH were terrific.

I had 5 IUI procedures in MGH until I finally got pregnant. Irene Souter was my doctor, but she never performed any of my IUI procedures. Every time it was a different doctor. So I can't rate her performance in this aspect. Furthermore, even though I asked at the front desk for Dr.Souter to do an IUI, I never saw her still. I had 2-4 appointments with Dr.Souter before I started my procedures. She is very pleasant, european "well-groomed" and nice looking, knowledgeable. She is pretty straight forward, clearly explains the problem, but at the same time stays optimistic. When she was seek, we had a phone appointment. I got a good advice without paying for doctor's visit))) I liked seeing her as a doctor, I wish she personally helped me during my procedures.

MGH is a factory of trainees. Dr Souter was my doctor but I only saw her three times in one year while undergoing multiple IVF cycles, which failed. I always feel rushed in and out at her office. Too much info is thrown at you. I never had any orientation. Or training on how to do the meds. She seems nice enough, but the patients are just numbers and statistics. Would not recommend.
