Dr. Ivan Darryl Hinnant, MD

Dr. Hinnant is absolutely terrible. I spent months under his care. He half heartedly explained procedures, hardly explained out comes for them. Repeatedly sent me back through physical therapy after I explained in great detail the pain it caused. He does not listen to you at all. He then prescribed medications that did not align with the pain I had. The guy doesn't care and is simply on to the next patient. I've never been left dumbfounded by a doctor until this guy. Please avoid at all costs.

He is awful. He doesn't listen to you at all. He immediately comes to a conclusion before he even talks to you. The injections he gave me made me worse off then I was originally. I absolutely do not recommend him at all.

Today was the first time I saw Dr. Hinnant. I saw him for lower back pain and neck pain. On his desk he had chips and ginger ale, in addition to injection bottles and syringes, (also a nice smart phone). Let's just say after 10 years of working there he's settled right in. I told him I needed help with my back and neck, I explained that I wanted a referral for Physical Therapy. His phone rang (not his fault, he told them to call the front office). He looked over the computer which has all my records from Portsmouth, Langley, and Eustis. In addition I had filled out 4 or 5 pages of history before I sat down in his exam room. He noticed I had been up stairs to Pain Management earlier that day and that they believed I had Fibromyalgia. I said yes that's right. He has me take off my shoes and sit on the exam table and he tested my reflexes, lie down and pressed on my pelvis in various ways (to rule out a back problem), moved my legs around a bit. Stood up, bent down, twist… this way then that. All of that, although done way too quickly, was what should have been done to evaluate the lower back. Here's what went wrong. We were talking about Fibromyalgia and using Cymbalta to treat it. Suddenly, he left me to take a phone call, it was like 10 minutes, when he came back he acted as if he was surprised someone was in the room. He got back on the computer and talked about cymbalta and seeing a pain therapist along with taking the drug for best results. I said, fine. He said, something like, "do you tolerate drugs well?" I didn't know what that meant, so I said, yes I guess so unless you mean my stomach, I have stomach problems. On my paperwork and on their computer it is listed what drugs I take and my diseases, this is important when prescribing a new medicine. He didn't mention anything about NOT taking Cymbalta if you have kidney disease. He had looked at those numbers (kidney function) before he left the room to make the phone call. He even said they were a little high. I also had narrow angle glaucoma (treated), take tramadol, and Rizatriptan (Maxalt) for my migraines. All of those things are listed as either issues or drugs that will affect Cymbalta (the heck with the drug what about my health). So not only didn't he catch the problems, when I went to the pharmacy (at Portsmouth) they just handed it to me. I told them it was my first time taking it...is there anything I should know??? She pulls out the paper and starts to read it, I said never mind I can read it myself. Socialized medicine is the best. Thanks Obama!!
