Dr. Jack Elliot Rosenblatt, MD

I was told during my third hospitalization for bipolar disorder that I was "treatment-refractory" and would probably need "maintenance ECT shock therapy and be hospitalized an average twice a year. I asked my internist for a referral to the most knowledgeable doctor she knew. She referred me to Dr. Rosenblatt, who was working at NIH at the time and saw patients part-time. That was in 1980. I followed her advice. I have not been hospitalized for nearly 36 years under Dr. Rosenblatt's care. When I was out of work for two years, he did not charge me for appointments so that I could pay for my medication.When I found work(same employer now for over 25 years), he resumed billing me and did not ask me to pay for the appointments during the time I was unemployed. As Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes was asked to rate President Franklin Roosevelt, he replied, "Second class mind, first rate disposition." If I were asked to rate Dr. Jack Rosenblatt, I would reply, "First rate disposition and… first-rate mind." He had to have both to keep treating the pain-in-the-behind character I was in those days. I asked him why years later, and he said, "I saw something I zzžqdidn't think should be wasted--character." I saw Dr. Rosenblatt at a key point in my life where things might have gone another way. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable and compassionate. I felt that I had put my issues into the hands of someone who had broad experiences and resources to address them.

I wouldn't try to change his mind unless I was sure I was right and was wrong. Do you think you know more about his field than he does? I don't know you, but I seriously doubt it.
