He painted an extremely rosy picture of my expected condition immediately following knee replacement surgery. I was actually released from the hospital the same day as my surgery. I was in extreme pain shortly thereafter. My knee swelled to 4 times its normal size with very large blisters just bursting with pus. Nurses who came to the house to change the bandages were taken aback. The 5mg oxycodone pills were totally inadequate, so they increased the dose to 1 5mg pill plus a 5 mg ER pill—again totally inadequate. This was increased to first, 10 mg , and then 2 10 mg pills at a time. I was taking this dose every few hours—a dangerously high level. The doctor could not explain the huge blisters nor the pain. He guessed the cause was a wound vac, but this was removed after 2 days, while the blisters lasted for weeks. The ice packs provided needed to be balanced like a book on one’s head. They didn’t tell me about knee braces available with tubes connected to an ice box.

Dr. Manuel replaced both of my knees on the same day in 2013, after I promised to do every single bit of rehab he prescribed. This was a good choice for me as we were moving to a new city & state within the year, and I needed to be able to do my part to make the move happen. He managed not only the surgery, but chose the rehab facility and hooked me up with home health nurse and rehab after my return home. Since leaving Austin, these knees have hopped trains in England and Wales, wandered thru Santa Fe chasing the muse of Georgia O'Keefe, wandered the streets of Clarksdale Ms during the JukeJoint Festival, traveled thru British Columbia by train, bus and ferry, & walked thru countless bookstores. My consumption of Tylenol and painkillers has gone from daily in 2013 to maybe 2-3 times a month now on a bad month. This surgery has been a blessing to me every single day.

Dr. Manuel very successfully replaced my left knee and completed a revision required due to a fall injury. I am most grateful for the expert care I have received. Even my physical therapist was impressed by my progress after surgery. I feel completely confident with his care and that of his professional and caring staff. Thank you Dr. Jake Manuel.
