Dr. James Arthur Black, MD

Dr. Black should not be practicing medicine. I met Dr. Black at Neurology Specialist of Nevada. He had recently moved there from Texas. I went to Neurology Specialist of Nevada for an annual check-up and anti-seizure prescription renewal and was told my regular Neurologist had left the practice. So I was told by the office staff that I could see Dr. Black's Physician Assistant. I was seen by the PA for ten minutes and then left. Two weeks later I received a letter from the DMV to turn in my license. The order to turn in my license was recommended by Dr. Black who I had never seen. So I went with my husband to see Dr. Black a few days latter to discuss the issue. But he did not even want to discuss the issue with us. We tried to explain to Dr. Black the type of minor seizures I have, but he had no interest in listening to us and shut us down every time we tried to talk to him. He only talked about making sure he kept his medical license rather than providing any treatment or assistance.… He also told us that he came to Neurology Specialist of Nevada two weeks ago and was leaving in two weeks to go back to Texas. After all of the inconsiderate things that he said to us he had the gall to ask me if I were returning for another visit. I told him absolutely not. It was as if he wanted not to return in order to punish the practice. Plus he did not follow State of Nevada Law when turning in someone's name into the DMR to relinquish their drivers license. He failed to notify me before sending the order to the state and never gave me a copy of the order. Unfortunately after my visit with him I will have a hard time trusting any doctor in the future.

This "Doctor" did not listen to what I had to say, and when I tried to relay the results of my own research, he interrupted me with "I don't bother with anything from Wikipedia". When I tried to discuss my own theories of what was going on, he would interrupt with stupid anecdotes from his years in the Army. Do not waste your time (not to speak of your money, and that of your insurance) with this "Doctor"!

I went to Dr Black complaining of extreme migraines and fainting/possible seizures. He ran zero tests and told me it was a "female thing" I would grow out of. I am now being treated for epilepsy. Thanks for your concern, Dr Black!

Straight forward and to the point. I don't go the doctor to chitchat.

I have to say I was weary after reading the reviews on Dr Black, but decided since my neurosurgeon who I respect alot referred me to him (telling me he knows his stuff.) I almost called and canceled once I read the reviews, but decided to give him the benifit of the doubt. The office is shabby, but I have to say the doctor was straight to the point, and knew what he was talking about. He took time to listen, although he wasn't into chit chatting about it...he got straight to the point, asked questions, and made a treatment plan. I am not one for doctor's who sugar coat things, and who tell you what you want to hear. I want them to use the expertise they went to school for and tell me how it is and how it should be. I am over weight. He had nothing directly to say about that, and was NEVER rude to me about it. He is a older man that is there to do his job, and has so far done well. He may be what some call a bit eccentric, since he was in hiking boots, and a t-shirt...but to me I would… call him a good doctor. If you want everything sugar coated he would not be the doctor for you.

Dr. Black's quick and accurate diagnosis saved my life. While i agree that he msy not have the best bedside manner, his skill as a neurologist makes up for that shortcoming.

Diagnosed correctly with multiple sclerosis in 1988 after just a brief physical examination, I nonetheless had a terrible experience with this doctor, and am chagrined to see he has not improved. I also had no trouble getting an appointment, and have said ever since that a neurologist who can see you the next day is one you should stay away from. Dr. Black was unshaven and seemed drunk. When I asked him, stunned, what it meant to have MS, he dramatically held out his hand, palm up, saying "DO YOU SEE A CRYSTAL BALL IN THIS HAND? I HAVE NO CRYSTAL BALL. SOME OF MY PATIENTS WALK, BUT I CAN COUNT THEM ON THE FINGERS OF THIS ONE HAND." I am not being melodramatic - I nearly blacked out - went outside to wait for my husband to pick me up, and when he did, simply said "take me to the nearest bar and order me a double please" . I never saw him again, made an appt with a proper neuro at Virginia Mason and though Dr. Black was right in his diagnosis (a coincidence? I don't really know - he… may be talented in diagnosis, or he may absolutely suck at it, but he got mine right). I turned out to have a relatively benign course of MS -- and I had learned that Dr. Black's technique in letting a patient know she has MS was absolutely unforgivable. I have no more time to write this, just wanted to warn patients out there that this doc has a long history of malpractice, whether official in-the-courtroom malpractice I don't know, but mal it is! Beware!

I have seen several neurologists over the years due to head injuries. I had a massive blow to the head landing me in the Emergency Room and was instructed to follow up with this doctor. Easy to get an appointment, but I know why now. He is not only inept but apathetic and hateful. Rude is too kind of a word to describe this Dr. He never examined my head, he looked through 3 pieces of paper and shined a light in my eyes and they proceeded to berate, chide and condemn my entire medical history on my eating habits. Accusing me of eating too much all the time and flippantly wasting his time. Well he wasted my time and I have an internal medicine specialist that works with me in that direction. He never addressed my neurological concerns and when he was done, he huffed his way out the door and just left me there not even bothering to tell me how to get out of his office. I do not care how long he has been practicing, this man lacks basic human skills and his neurological ability is highly… questionable when he spent 10 minutes with them and then left angrily. No one should be treated that way and I feel he is abusing insurance claims. BEWARE!

This was the second time I had seen Dr. Black. The first time he took time with me but today he screamed at me and insulted me and rushed me out of his office in 5 minutes. I had asked him to look at my neck for a possible other problem I was having and he told me to see a neurosurgeon and when I asked why he stated "don't you want someone to fix your neck". He would not even examine me. He made insulting comments to me. I won't go to this doctor again. He was very verbally abusive to me.
