Dr. James Paul Carleo, MD

It has been 6 years since my son was born, but Dr. Carleo was the doctor who delivered him. He FORCED my husband and I to schedule a c-section because my son was measuring 10 pounds and he told me if I delivered vaginally, he would most likely have to break his collar bone to get him out (because I was apparently too narrow). He also said that absolutely no OB would induce me. Lol. So then, he broke his collar bone IN the c-section and didn’t tell us. We found out the day we left the hospital. Then, when we tried to have an investigation done, he left the hospital and left to go to Texas. Also, my son was absolutely not 10 pounds. He was 8lbs10oz.

In regards to Doctor Carleo. I made multiple appointments to go see him, and two out of the four times he cancelled the appointment and I was told AT the front desk when I had driven all the way there that he wasn't available. That's not the worst part. For my first appointment, Dr. Carleo talked to me about my endometriosis and wanted to put me on a medication called Orilissa. I didn't know much about this medication, but he told me that it would put my body through menopause and I didn't have many other options. So, I said I would take the medicine and he sent it to the pharmacy. After getting home, I did some research on the medication. I am 28 years old, so going through menopause right now isn't exactly ideal. The reviews for the medication were TERRIFYING. I suffer from depression and anxiety, and the doctor knew that because he knew the medications I was taking. Orilissa should NOT be taken by people with depression or anxiety, because it dramatically increases suicidal… thoughts. These weren't just reading on the back of the bottle generic side effects; these warnings were written by people who had taken the drug. In addition to the suicidal thoughts, the Orilissa also causes (by everyone who takes it, it seems) vomiting, stiff joints, crying spells, panic attacks, etc. After I did my research, my pharmacy called and said the medication would be $700. So I'm like... okay I'm just not going to take this. I call Macarthur and tell them about what I think, and they were really pushing Orilissa. They said they would fix the cost for me and talk to the rep and for me not to worry about it; that Orilissa would be good for me to take. At this point, I was almost convinced that I should take it, because doctors and nurses are telling me to. So, Macarthur fixes the price, and that is when I make appointments two and three, where the doctor doesn't show up. I really wanted to look at my other options besides Orilissa. Appointment four gets here, and it's over a month later because appointments two and three the doctor didn't show up. I'm in the room waiting for the doctor. I will recite, to the best of my ability, the conversation that ensues when Dr. Carleo comes in. DOCTOR: "How are you liking the Orilissa?" ME: "I called multiple times and told the front that I wasn't taking Orilissa because it makes me uncomfortable." The doctor gets frustrated with me. DOCTOR: "You're not taking it?" "ME: No. I read the side effects..." D: "Where did you read these?" M: "Online. In articles. I feel uncomfortable taking the medication because it can dramatically increase depression and anxiety." D: "It doesn't do that. Who told you that?" M: "Also, I wasn't able to get a hold of the medicine for a while because of the cost." D- "Did you call the front desk?" M- "Yes, I called multiple times and the cost still didn't go down enough." D- "Then you should have called again." (In my head I'm thinking... I've physically come to the office twice) Here's where it gets worse: M- "I just want to know what my other options are besides taking the Orilissa. What about..." D: -"Tell me you've not going to say Lupron. Are you going to say Lupron?" M-"No... I don't even know what that is." D: "HERE ARE YOUR OPTIONS. YOU CAN TAKE THE ORILISSA OR YOU CAN GET SURGERY. WHAT'S YOUR CHOICE?" I am in shock now. Backing down. D: "The Orilissa rep is here right now. I'm going to go talk to them about making it more affordable for you, then I'm going to send the prescription to your pharmacy" He walks out. I am still in shock and cannot believe that this has happened. I told the doctor I was uncomfortable with taking the medicine, and he kept PUSHING AND PUSHING. After he told me the Orilissa rep was there, it finally DAWNED on me: This guy is making money from prescribing this medicine. The doctor was looking out for his own interests and his own pocket and not mine. I could be mistaken, but I believe that what he did that day was 1000% ILLEGAL trying to push a medicine that he makes commission off of onto me when I didn't want to take it. I went to a different OBGYN a week later. She was kind. She listened to my needs. And then, ladies and gentlemen, this is what she said after I told her this story: "I would have NEVER put you on Orilissa because of your medical history. That could have seriously messed with your brain and gone VERY bad." There was another solution for me besides this medicine. Thousands of women have endometriosis, and it frightens me that this doctor could potentially put another woman through what he put me through by giving me the ultimatum: "You either take the Orilissa, or you undergo surgery." I am shaking right now writing this review. I never thought a doctor could be that negligent. Do not ever go to this place. Do not put yourself through that.

He is the definition of a crook. I have had three appointments with him, all them I waited longer than I was actually with him. Two were his first appointments of the day and he was over 20 minutes late! The third was to get refered to a specialist to drain an infection that was extremely painful. Not only did he refer me to another doctor out of network, but also told me to get an ultra sound done prior to seeing the surgeon. Long story short the doctor he refered me to COULDN'T DRAIN IT. So I was sent down the hall to pay for ANOTHER DOCTOR OUT OF NETWORK. 2 "appointments" that I was told the doctor I was seeing couldn't help me, and ANOTHER ultrasound. He is a crook and will refer you to other crooks! Such a fraud.

Dr Carleo and his team are excellent. Everyone is so courteous and professional. The office is also really clean and nice. Couldn’t have asked for a better dr to deliver my babies!

From the very first appointment I had, I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes in the lobby before seeing Dr. Carleo. He's extremely kind and patient. He answers all of my questions and concerns without making me feel like he's rushing me. I've never felt awkward or uncomfortable when I'm with him. I was experiencing heavy bleeding and cramping after an endometrial biopsy he performed on me and when I called the office they got me in within the hour. I told him of my concerns, he prescribed some medication that I took that afternoon, and by that evening the bleeding had slowed significantly! I seriously LOVE Dr. Carleo and I highly, highly recommend him! He's hands down the best gynecologist I've ever had!

Great doctor, great staff, great experience so far!

I love this office. It's clean and I'm usually in and out. The front desk receptionist is awesome and my 3-year-old daughter loves her! Dr. Carleo seems pretty down-to-earth and he's answered every "little" question I've had. The only "down side" is having to have another C-section. I had a C-section with my previous pregnancy and wanted to try to go all natural this time but unfortunately Dr. Carleo does not do vbacs and said it would be high risk as well. We can't wait to meet our baby girl!

MacArthur OBGYN is such a great clinic. Every staff member is nice, curteous, and friendly. I don't wait at all when I go to see Carleo. I came when I was already into my 3rd trimester and there was no judgement or questions asked, just professionalism from Dr.Carleo and from every and all staff members. I was initially skeptical having a male OBGYN, but I am perfectly comfortable with Dr. Carleo. Highly recommended.
