Dr. James John Lettenberger, MD

Dr. Lettenberger was professional and warm. He addressed my issue and concerns with great importance. He listen to me and followed up with questions to help me address my issues. Easy to reach and the best that therapy has to offer.

Positives: Very nice guy. Seems to be quite knowledgeable. Believes in shared decision-making with patients, rather than being a know-it-all doctor who dictates treatment. Always on time. Returns telephone calls same day. Takes his time; never seems to be in a rush to move on to the next patient. Negatives: Frequently out of the office, and does not check messages when he's away. Does not use email, which was fine 20 years ago but not these days.

Dr. Lettenberger has helped me through a difficult third year of law school with empathy and without judgement. I feel more comfortable speaking to him than I did to my previous psychiatrist, who had treated me for over 10 years. Dr. Lettenberger is always on time (though he doesn't make me feel bad when I'm late -- which is most of the time), he has continued to treat me during the past few months since I left DC (temporarily), and I feel like I can trust him. He does return calls within 24 hours or so, BUT it would be REALLY nice to have the ability to email him! : )

I found Dr. Lettenberger difficult to reach. He was out of the office very frequently, relying on associates to cover his calls.

Dr. Lettenberger takes his time is very attentive to my needs.

Having worked with numerous psychiatrists in connection with my PTSD and longstanding depression and anxiety issues, I can say without a doubt that Dr. Lettenberger has been the best. He has helped me find a medication regimen that works and really cares about understanding why you are seeking medication. So many psychiatrists will see you for 15-20 minutes and then hand out a script, but Dr. Lettenberger thinks it is important to have a longer visit so that you can really talk holistically about what is going on. In addition, as a lawyer at a big DC law firm, I really appreciate that Dr. Lettenberger has treated many people in similar situations and doesn't default to advising that I would probably feel better if I just worked less or took a different job. That's not to say that he doesn't provide good advice on work-life balance, just that he isn't judgmental and understands how to counsel people who are struggling with issues but also thrive in a fast-pace, high pressure job. His… sense of humor is fantastic, and I look forward to every appointment with him.

Dr. Lettenberger is a great doctor and even more so, a great life coach. I couldn't give a higher recommendation.

Both literally and figuratively--- Dr. Lettenbeger is an anti-intellectual intellectual powerhouse. Totally unassuming and completely at ease. Has made a major impact on my life in the short time (fewer than 12 months) I've been seeing him.

Dr. Lettenberger was my primary psychiatrist for three years (I moved to FL and no longer see him). Point blankly, he saved my life and there is no one better.
