Dr. James Emmett Mcdermott, MD

A native of Wheeling, West Virginia, Dr. McDermott is a graduate of the West Virginia University School of Medicine where he also completed residency training in internal medicine. Dr. McDermott completed a second residency program in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Kentucky and went on to receive fellowship training in cytopathology, a specialty in which he also holds board certification. Prior to joining Carolinas Pathology Group and Celligent Diagnostics in January 2000, Dr. McDermott was part of a hospital-based pathology practice in Indianapolis, Indiana. Today, he serves as Medical Director of the Cytopathology Lab for Carolinas Medical Center, overseeing all aspects of cytopathology including maintaining accreditation for the Cytology Laboratory through an aggressive quality improvement program and continuing medical education for staff. Dr. McDermott's primary areas of expertise include the fields of cytopathology and hematopathology. He performs and …interprets more than 8,000 fine needle aspiration biopsies and he interprets Pap tests to detect pre-malignant diseases of the uterine cervix.
