He attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where he graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in History while also being pre-med all four years. He was a four-year letterman on the mens soccer team and was honored to be voted captain his senior year. He attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for medical school and moved to New York City to complete his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Seton Hall University where he served as administrative chief resident.Following residency, he completed a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at the University of Texas Houston/Baylor College of Medicine program. There he received additional training performing hip arthroscopy, shoulder replacement and reconstructive surgeries. While in Houston, Dr. McDermott served as an assistant team physician for the Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, Houston Dynamo and the World Series Champion Houston Astros. This included performing physicals at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, and spending a week at the Astros training facility in Palm Beach, Florida, during spring training. He was an assistant team physician for the University of Houston and several 5A and 6A Division 1 Texas high school football programs. He is currently a team physician for Wofford College, USC Upstate and Spartanburg Methodist College in addition to several local area high schools.Dr. McDermott is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He remains actively involved with academic medical education and spends time throughout the year lecturing medical students about musculoskeletal pathology and its treatment at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) - Carolinas medical school.In his free time, Dr. McDermott can be found with his wife, Caroline, and their two beautiful young daughters. They are now delighted to call Spartanburg home.
