As most patients and mothers we want to feel our children are cared and respected by the medical Professional. Well this doctor was no gentleman. After he discharged my 10 yo from Childrens hospital I called to tell him he was having 5 min seizure more violent then in hospital. He said your child had negative EEG (even though since then he had positive EEG). He said go to ER or call 911 if you think he needs help. "I am hanging up on uou now" click ...

If you want a neurologist who is dedicated to helping your child live a better life, then Dr. Nelson is the physician for you. He is patient, gentle, soft spoken and listens to you and your child, he spends time with you and your child (vs. rushing through the appt.), he is very knowledgeable and familiar with the most current diagnostic and clinical treatment research, and he talks WITH you and your child (rather than talking "at you" or down to you). He explains test results, treatment plans (and all the available options) and any necessary follow-up very clearly, in a way that's easy to understand. He readily answers any questions we (or our daughter) may have, listens to our concerns and he took into consideration our daughter's unique special needs when he designed an individualized treatment plan for her (which is very different from some doctors' "cookie cutter" or "one size fits all" approach to patient treatment). Our daughter's neuro. condition and quality of life have… vastly improved over the past 18 mos., and one of the reasons for that is Dr. Nelson's thorough assessment, individualized plan of treatment for her, and comprehensive follow-up.

When my daughter was almost 3 (she’s 11 now), Dr. Nelson was working at Children’s Hospital in Omaha, NE. My daughter had suddenly dropped in a grand mal seizure one day and was hospitalized for several days because she went completely wild when she came to. She wouldn’t eat, just screamed and flailed, and I had to hold her tight most of the day just to keep her from harming herself and others. Imagine how terrifying- to see your toddler like this. They had performed multiple tests (EEG, CAT scan, MRI, spinal tap) and all that was coming up was a faint hint that she may have had mono in the past. Dr. Nelson wasn’t convinced this would have caused all that we were seeing. I remember when he came to talk to me about all the results. He told me “the course of treatment at the hospital for this is a high dose of steroids.” My heart sank. I could hardly hold her down as it was- she was out of her mind. Steroids might have made her bite off her tongue, who knows, but it just… felt wrong. Dr. Nelson then hesitated and said, “there might be something else we could try...” He had been at a teaching hospital before Omaha and there was an experimental treatment of IVig- 2000 people’s white blood cells. We had to sort of argue with a team of doctors (mainly because steroids are cheap and easy). I just had to get her that treatment, and Dr. Nelson argued why it could work and helped her get it. It was a real miracle what happened next. After her first round, she talked again for the first time. She said, “Momma, I hungry.” With tears in my eyes I asked what I could get her. She ate and said, “Momma I sleepy. You leave.” After the second treatment she started walking again. The whole experience left her with a little bit of muscle weakness on the left side, but she was able to fight off whatever it was that was causing such neurological havoc. Dr. Nelson was so calm and thought outside the box. He continued to see my daughter for several years until he deemed the incident to be singular and not a recurring problem. I wish he was still in Omaha. San Diego is lucky to have him.

my child has been showing severe signs of epilepsy. i would know because i also have epilepsy. he treated me the parent like i was an idiot and was not nice to my daughter. today was the first and the VERY LAST appointment we will have with him. i do not trust him with my daughters health.

My daughter has been stuggling with what seems like seizures and/or syncopy. Her symptoms are atypical for both. She was diagnosed by Dr. Nelson as having migraines. (This was in May and it is now January) Her episodes have continued and I have called his office to have a phone consultation. He has not once personally returned any phone calls! His nurse said I need to look up her symptoms on EMEDICINE! After two additional ER visits and NO CALL from Dr. Nelson we are looking for a new neurologist!

My daughter was discharged as a patient because I wanted Dr. Nelson to check her and not me, he didn't want her in his office unless she was sedated in some form, he wanted to handle her behavior medication, but when it got hard to find something that worked, he gave up.My daughters suffers from tuberous sclorsis, autism and adhd, I cant say I would recommend Dr. James Nelson

The office staff is not courteous and hardly ever answer the phone on the first try. On the first appointment they sent my daughters prescription electronically to mail order and it became a week long problem just to get the first refill which I never received. The VP of my company had to get involved. That was just to start. I am moving and will be happy to find another doctor because I will not miss this one at all.
