Highly recommend this Doctor

Dr. Nunley has replaced both my ankles. I can walk as much as I want to. He told me that I would like one new ankle better than the other. I love them both. I even play low impact tennis with no ill effects.

Dr Nunley preformed a total ankle replacement for me in 2012. It was a life altering event. The pain and swelling were alleviated and remain at bay some 6 years later. It is my understanding that he has replacements that are as much as 13 years out and still functioning well. I am hoping for similar results. He and a handful of Ortheopedics surgeons are responsible for the research that made these types of surgeries qualify for insurance payment acceptance. Thank you Dr. Nunley.

Dr. Nunley operated on my great, right toe and did a fusion. The scar is minimal and all is going well. The recovery the first three weeks was interesting, but after that my ability to walk continues to improve.

The doctor was wonderful. I was shocked to read negative reviews as he took tons of time with me, and even came back to check on me. He is a VERY distinguished doctor with all the research he has completed in his lifetime. If you have any complicated issues with the bones, this is the doctor to go to. Without him, my local hospital diagnosis was completely wrong and the treatment plan could have lifelong complications.

I would like to say that I have had many surgeries done by Dr. James Nunley. I am so grateful that he is my doctor. Because of his skill, knowledge and devotion, I don't have to suffer from intense pain in different parts of my body due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. If he left Duke Hospital today, I would find out where his new job would be and if possible, go to that facility to have my surgeries. Thank you for the quality of life you have given me!!

I had to wait a couple of months to see Dr. Nunley but it was well worth it. Positive patient experience and outcome:-)

Dr Nunley was seen on recommendation of a friend of a friend by my mother for foot surgery. She had suffered with severe foot issues for years and finally decided to take the plunge. We were hopeful that surgery could provide both aesthetic improvement along with providing physical relief of pain she experienced when walking. We put up with Dr Nunley's condescending attitude because we figured he was a department chair at Duke and must know what he was doing, right? Long story short, she is worse off than before the surgery. I say worse off because he took bones from her toes and now they just flop around, over & under each other. He was also to remove a couple bunions, but they are still there. There were complications following surgery because of the casting done following surgery. When she came out of surgery he told me he had cut nearly every bone in her foot! We were never informed he was planning to cut every bone in her foot. Eight months have passed. The only shoe she… can fit in to is the new-fangled running shoes that are supposed to mimic bare feet. She wears these becasue they keep her toes separated. After the fact he admits to having made in "error in judgement" in not having done enough! Really? Not enough. He has done more than enough. She has since seen another physician who basically has said he would have not done what Nunley did, but that there is basically nothing that can be done at this point because of what has already been done. I know not all sugeries are successful, but this was a failure.

Where do I start? Nunley really is cold as ice. He doesn't listen to anything the patient has to say at all. Communication is vital or it's hard to get 100% diagnosis. Very easy to miss things when a doc doesn't know everything that is going on. When I tried to ask questions, Nunley would respond as if I'm wasting his time. He literally walked out the door on me when I tried to ask him a questionHe spent no more than 3 minutes telling me a diagnosis(not exaggerating) and when I began to ask a question he left.His PA(malaguti) is the worst. Nunley does surgery on some big time people so I think it's gone to his head.He did Grant Hills surgery, however do the research. Hill developed an infection after the surgery and was operated on by other doctors after. Do your research.

I am stunned by the positive reviews about Dr. Nunley. I had an appointment recently and it was horrible. He was dismissive, cold, uncaring, and rude. I waited over two hours to see him- and will NEVER go back. First of all, they take xrays of everyone, before they are ordered from the Dr. You sign in..you instantly get an x-ray. Umm- I had a tendon injury..it's not visable on x-ray. Complete waste of money to take needless x-rays, why not wait until they are ordered by the Doctor? I brought the images of my last three MRIs, but Dr. Nunley brusquely stated "he didn't need them". Really? You can diagnose tendon issues from the x-ray? I think not. Definitely look elsewhere for an Orthopaedic surgeon.
