What causes dental fear or dental phobia?
Causes can be divided into direct and indirect experiences.
Direct experience is the most common way people develop dental fears stemming from a traumatic, difficult, and/or painful dental experience. Additionally, dentists who were considered "impersonal", "uncaring", "uninterested" or "cold" are found to result in high dental fear.
Indirect experience is less common but can be as troublesome. People can become fearful from vicarous learning …experiences (hearing about others), from mass media, previous non dental traumatic experiences and from the feeling of lack of control (a dentist continues to treat even when you ask to stop).
