Dr. James Verheyden

I have been going to Dr. Verheyden for sometime now, always found him to be courteous, professional and caring. Always takes the time to listen to my concerns. I highly recommend!!

Dr. Verheyden audio recorded my appointment to check out my injured hand without telling me. He didn’t care at all about me and was very focused on his dictation. When I asked about whether he was recording our conversation, he gave me some ridiculous excuse. I saw him at The Center’s Shevlin Park location. No other patients were there - to the point that staff and I chatted about how quiet things were. There was no reason for him to rush me out the way he did. The entire thing was beyond bizarre. Note: I have health insurance and have had good experiences with doctors at the Center in the past. This was beyond appalling. If you have to wait for an appointment with someone else, do it. This guy is bad news.

Leaving 1 star reviews on all components because I want to get the read and the doctor's attention. My wife recently saw Dr. Verheyden for a painful injury. It seems that he subscribes to the 'tough love' school of medicine and I imagine he'd be right at home in the 19th century where operations were practiced without anesthetic and doctors had the status of minor gods, never to be questioned. If you'd like to know how I justify such a brash statement, read on. When I picked her up form his office the first time, she was in tears. She described to me a horrible appointment, much like all the other low ratings on this site. He was indeed arrogant, unsympathetic and borderline abusive. He was arrogant because he told her nothing could be done and did not explain why. He was unsympathetic she'd have to get used to it and should wear minimal bandages, even if it was going to be painful. He was borderline abusive because he made a point of massaging the injured area to the extreme… that she was not only crying and nearly passed out from the pain. Perhaps he was right and nothing could be done, but the way that message was delivered was short, curt and cold. And he's probably right that she needs to use the area as much as possible so it heals correctly but not doing significant bandaging for a recently injured area seems harsh. Finally, the massaging may have been a good idea to get the blood flowing and register discomfort, but to take it to such extremes is hard to justify. Upon later visits, she got pretty much the same treatment, but because she was prepared and the injury more healed, it hurt less. Still, he kept telling her how amazingly sensitive she is and continuing to massage the injury in a painful manner. So you be the judge. He may be a very skilled, intelligent, learned and excellent person. He may do great things for people. But it sounds like there's a pattern of his bedside manner being outdated by 100 years or so.

After going to see Dr. Verheyden on several occasions for various hand and wrist issues, I recently had hand surgery performed by him. Dr. Verheyden is a very caring, compassionate and capable physician whom I highly recommend for excellent care and follow up. I would not hesitate to recommend his services to anyone in need of his medical expertise.

Did a great job and healing was a little ahead of schedual.

Dr Verheyden treated me for broken wrist years ago and told me i had Dupryen’s Contracture which would eventually need correcting. Recently that correction was done by a new non invasive (non-Surgical) procedure. Done in short time and hand pain and distortion corrected and looking normal in a week. highly recommend him as a totally grateful patient (GP)!!

Not understanding of the lack of motion I have left in my hand blames it on me being a low pain tolerance yet I have all my pain med's left. I don't want to take pills I want to get better not mask the pain with drugs. My fingers are worse now than they were before the surgery, and all he can say is that's how it is!!!

Refused to admit that there was something seriously wrong with hand surgery he performed on me. Weeks and months of excruciating pain. Physical therapy that made it worse. Was told my Dr Verheyden that I wasn't doing the hand exercises enough. Pain specialist sent us to another hand surgeon who found a screw had been placed into a nerve. We found out later that xrays and mri that were done and reviewed by Dr. Verheyden showed this! He either refused to admit had happened or was very inept at reading them. I had to have corrective hand surgery. Surgeon said it was the worse hand she had ever seen and the hand had not even been fused which was the purpose of the surgery in the 1st place. Should ave sued!

Dr James Verheyden resently performed Thumb Surgery on my husband he is a excellent Surgeon.Great personality the my husband and i are very lucky to have him as our Dr and the Center is too.

I went to see this Dr. due to large accumulation of fluids in my elbow. X-Ray showed bone chips so surgery was scheduled. Two days after surgery my drain was removed and on the third day the elbow opened up and began leaking large amounts of liquid. I went back in to see the Dr. who insinuated that i had caused the problem. Several weeks later I finally convinced him that something must be done as the elbow was not healing.Although he still felt it was my fault, he agreed to do something.While being prepped my elbow burst open in front of two staff members. He cut away the skin around the opening and stitched it back. This was done in a room with two doors opened to hallways. I ended up with a severe infection which he refused to admit was anything serious,"just fibrous tissue". He had a cast room technician remove the stitches in the cast room which is certainly not very clean by nature. The most ugly junk was taken out with no anesthetic and no culture was taken. He had the tech wrap… the open wound and sent me to schedule surgery the next day.Within an hour, the dressing was saturated so he had the tech just add three more pads without removing the saturated one. Three hours later, at home, it was all saturated so I wrapped the elbow in lastic and sealed it so he could see it in the morning.Although he would not admit to an infection, he had a potent IV antibiotic administered during surgery. After three attempts in eight weeks and the loss of my arm during this period, my elbow is finally healing. No one should need to go through an experience such as this so I would never recommend him.
