Saint Joseph's Hospital may be good for its neuroscience, but the endoscopy wing leaves something to be desired. Couple that with lack of communication from Dr. Huang's practice and it becomes a nightmare.I made 4 calls over a 2-week period to Dr. Huang's assistant to schedule an appointment (per my GI doc). In the end, I called my GI's office to request a referral elsewhere. They believed that office was "the best" and insisted I go there. Finally, they called themselves but I still didn't receive a call until 4:55 pm... since I missed the call, I had to call back twice more just to schedule my initial consult!I don't know where they got my information from, but when I arrived for my first appointment, I was faced with a mailing address and an emergency contact I didn't recognize. Youd think they would have checked it while I was on the phone since they were going to mail me paperwork before my initial appointment, but no. Over the weeks that followed, I eventually realized the… information they had on file was from 17 years ago!!! Where in the world did they get that?? o.O Clearly, the information wasn't from my GI doctor or my PCP. Seriously?? During my first appointment, Dr. Huang scheduled two tests and only explained one in-depth with a partial explanation (we send a camera down and monitor) of the second test . I assumed the other would be explained more at a later date... it was, while the nurse was prepping me to go in! Even then, the lack of time led to a failure to share all the information I would need to know. I did update my information during that initial visit to Dr. Huangs office and specified they *must* include my unit # because, although a house, the neighborhood is gated and we all share the same address. Lo and behold, I never received my mail about the procedures Dr. Huang wanted to complete. Apparently, it was returned to them for failing to include the unit #, but rather than calling me, they "supposedly" emailed the information to me. While they had the correct email address, I received nothing. They didn't phone to let me know of the mail failure and they didn't call to verify an email arrived. Without the notes I took during the initial appointment set up, I would have needed to reschedule all those appointments and start again. Since I had two appointments, I corrected the address again while at the hospital (who apparently got their information from Dr. Huang's office) and, yet, no one mailed the information for the next procedure the following week. Seriously?? And this was the one they ailed to explain properly during the initial appointment. Major Fail! When I arrived on the second test date, a nurse gave me an overview because I told her I didn't understand what would happen with the "BRAVO. The EGD I was old hat at. Apparently I would need to take a monitor home with me and track symptoms for 48 hours? Thanks for the heads up! I thought it was something done in the hospital and then Id just go home. Meanwhile, I am experienced complications and side effects from the BRAVO capsule. The nurse was rushed which is probably why I never learned about the side effects. How to top it off? I probably need to do it again because they said to mark "coughs" but I don't "cough," I burp. Which I did loads of and, the one thing I had control over (vomit) I had lots of again too. Why? Because no one explained they would be embedding the capsule in my esophagus. The problem? My esophagus is so sensitive to these things that it will induce vomiting. Thanks for the heads up!Of course, the motility study was it's own nightmare, but I understand that was a member of Saint Joseph's staff. Yay for Saint Joseph! Charge me up the wazoo for parking when I am forced to go there for a procedure that could probably be done in a stand alone testing clinic with more courteous and professional staff that is conveniently located and has free parking. Of course, I don't think I could pick Dr. Huang out of a line up. She didn't stay to tell me how the BRAVO went - no one did. Nor did anyone review the instructions again before I left. And, since it was Friday, once the anesthesia wore off and I woke up after 4 pm, there was no one to contact with my questions or concerns thanks to my lovely side effects. For all I know, there were complications but, why would anyone tell me, the patient, to watch for any problems? Everyone prefers a malpractice suit, of course. There was one assistant who was helpful and I had thought, after the bumpy start, perhaps the office was back on track. Apparently that assistant was only covering for the original assistant who made me run in circles. Now I am back to her and, after 3 calls today, I still have no answers about how to deal with the side effects/complications from the BRACO. Yay!Suffice it to say, I cant imagine trusting Dr. Huangs office for surgery to correct the problem when the whole process getting to this point has been filled with demonstrations of incompetence and a failure to communicate. Do I really want to go in for a solution only to find myself with even greater medical problems?
