Dr. Jason G Barrera, MD

Dr Barrera is an excellent Dr. I have had him as my primary care for 3 years. He is very attentive and very thorough during every appointment. Three physicals and numerous follow up appointments have all gone well. He takes the time to listen to you and explain in detail his findings. If you have lab work prior to an appointment he will go over the results with you so you understand them. He is very open to discussion about you as a patient and what it the best course of treatment for you. He takes the time to get to know you as his patient and what will work for you. By that I mean he just doesn’t go by textbook answers for any complaint you bring up. For example: You complain, I have headaches in the afternoon. He won’t just say take Tynolel. Instead he will ask numerous questions to try and figure what is causing you to have headaches in the afternoon. He treats each patient as an individual and knows not just a textbook answer will work for his patients. I know this to be true as… I’ve gotten family members into his practice. We are all happy with his care and him as a person who cares very much about us. I highly recommend Dr Barrera!

Dr. Barrera is obviously a very smart person, and a vastly knowledgeable medical professional. Of that, there is no doubt. However, he comes across as extremely arrogant, condescending, and dishonest. Whenever I see him, while I always feel satisfied that he was able to answer my questions and give me good medical advice, I also always feel awful about myself and my intelligence. For example, the last time I saw him, I asked him about a few odd spots I had on my skin. Although he did look at them after a little conversing, his facial expressions, body language, and tone betrayed what he really thought. I just remember feeling that he thought I was a burden, or below him, for troubling him with the questions I had. It's disheartening and the exact opposite of how a doctor should be. I feel less motivated now to bring things up in future visits. While I was trying to convince him to even look at them, in the beginning, he was also very condescending. He wouldn't even acknowledge or… validate my worries about them. He isn't a very good listener. Which brings me to my other point -- He's very obviously dishonest about his true opinions of you as a person. I've had a few mental health issues in the past, and we were talking about getting me a therapist again. There are no present worries -- I'm doing very well -- but he couldn't seem to let go that it had to happen right this second. I myself see the value in and want to see a therapist myself, and I told him this repeatedly, explaining that the only reason I'm not actively looking for one is because I'm in the middle of a move and I have no time to until after I am settled in to my new home. He refused to accept this, and repeatedly expressed that "it would make him more comfortable if I started seeing someone now." He didn't listen at all to any of the points I made, nor even acknowledge them. I insisted I was as much if not more interested in therapy for myself as he was, but that it's a matter of needing the time to set it up. He would not back down. Simultaneously, he would never express himself directly -- I could tell it was bothering him, and considering how he kept insisting I could tell he wouldn't take "no" for an answer, but he simultaneously acted as if everything was calm and used very passive language to try and imply he wasn't trying to force me to do something I have literally no time to at the moment. It was extremely stressful. The last point I want to make here is that he kept saying "It would make [him] more comfortable if [I] were in therapy" -- This is exactly the wrong mindset to have as a care provider. The relationship between a patient and a medical professional is about making the PATIENT comfortable -- NOT the doctor. Plus, it was obvious anyways that he was just saying that because he had nothing else to say. He carries himself in such a high-and-mighty, superior, arrogant way, that he has to justify insisting something like that with the phrase "it would make me more comfortable," because he can't very well say what he's really thinking -- "I'm smarter than you and I know better than you so do what I say for your treatment." Sadly, his tone, expressions, & body language betray the thoughts he's trying to hide. He may be a professional and have studied medicine for years, but every patient is different and knows themselves best, and ultimately therefore deserves a say in their own treatment, too. Don't expect to have any voice whatsoever though, if you're seeing Dr. Barrera.
