Dr. Jason Clark Friedrichs, MD

I was a patient of Dr. Friedrichs when he was in Illinois. Very professional and caring. He is one of the best. We all miss him back here in Sycamore/DeKalb office. Thank you Dr. Friedrichs.

This is probably the third time I have attempted to post this horrible experience myself and my elderly stepmother had with this doctor and each time I tell this story I get angrier at how poorly she was treated. My stepmother has the onset of dementia, which means, on many days, she is just fine, only a little forgetful. She does not require a caregiver at this time, as was determined by her neurologist who performed many tests to determine her mental accuity. She does have outbursts of frustration at times when she cannot remember something, but otherwise she functions quite well. I had made an appointment for her to be seen by Dr. Friedrichs because she had a terrible eye infection and we had been to the immediate care the day prior and they could not determine what was causing the infection. Since my stepmother had been to see Dr. Friedrichs before, I made the appointment and dropped her off at the scheduled time and advised the front desk receptionist that arrangements had… been made to have her picked up immediately after her appointment. I was advised that I was not allowed to "leave her there without someone from the family accompanying her" because of a previous incident where she was experiencing bouts of double vision while still having a license and living alone at the time and had gone into his office rather angrily complaining that the "prism glasses" that he prescribed for her were making her dizzy and "causing her to fall down". She was upset about the price she paid for these special glasses and the fact that it only worsened her condition. Since I was only on a lunch break to drop her off the day of her appointment to have her infected eye checked, I advised them that "the person whom I made my stepmother's appointment with never stated that she had to have someone with her", as she had always previously gone by herself. The reason, I was told, was that "the Doctor was afraid of a lawsuit" since she blamed him for the dizziness she was experiencing. I left my stepmother at the office, assuming she would be seen, and was called by their office manager after leaving their office and while on my way back to work that I had to come pick her up. I was very direct and not at all using foul language as she accused me of "abandoning an elderly person". She had an appointment for Chrissakes ! How can that be abandonment, especially when I had also made arrangements for her to be picked up immediately after her appointment ? They just didn't want to deal with her. Not believing that they would go as far as to not even see this poor woman who weighs in at a whopping 103 lbs and has many other health issues, making it difficult for her to ambulate easily, I could not believe that they let her sit in the waiting room all afternoon, refusing to see her. I was accused of using foul language to the office manager and they also stated that my stepmother was being very disruptive in the waiting room. (She was chatting pleasantly with another elderly lady, and certainly not causing a disruption like they stated). I had to make arrangements since I had to return to work from my lunch break to have my husband pick her up, leaving his job that is over an hour away from this doctor's Sycamore office. Once my husband arrived, the doctor "summoned him to his office" stating that "we were lucky they didn't report abandonment of an elderly person to the police. Now, considering the doctor and his staff left her in the waiting room for over 2 hours, I would say that the only abandonment that went on was from him refusing to see her due to his fear that she would complain or cause him legal problem, because it was later determined that these expensive prism glasses he sold her were not even needed. I intend to contact the Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulations Board that takes complaints for those licensed doctors who have done unethical things. I believe he deserves to be reprimanded for refusing to see her with the awful eye infection she had and ignoring her while she waited in his waiting room to be seen. My husband said that the state she was in upon his arrival there was heartbreaking. She was frazzled, upset that the doctor refused to see her after we specifically made all arrangements for her to be picked up afterward. I have no other explanation for this type of treatment other than they may need to do some additional training on how to handle frail and elderly people who are scared and in need of treatment. Shame on you Dr. Friederichs and your staff !
