Receptionist was rude. Not willing to even try to schedule an appointment even though Dr. said call with any concerns or questions.

Dr. Whalen is a wonderful doctor. Very pleasant and extremely professional!

Dr. Whalen treats 5 members of my family and its no mystery why we keep going back. He is definitely one of the best doctors in the pittsburgh area. He has helped diagnose 2 of my family members with conditions of no relation to dermatology because he takes the time to look at the patient as a whole, rather than just looking at your skin. I've read a few reviews complaining that he loves to cut things off excessively. I could not disagree more. Skin cancer is such an aggressive form of skin and not something to be messed around with. He has done countless mole and mark removals for my family and I can say confidently no one in my family will pass of skin cancer. My only recommendation would be if you have to have an spot removed from your face, consider getting a plastic surgeon to do the job. His degree is in dermatology, not cosmetology, and he'll be the first one to say it. He is a great doctor and I would recommend him to anyone.

Zero empathic ability. Belittled my concerns regarding my chronic disfiguring skin disorder.

I have been to him couple times and every time he finds something to take off. He is not the type of doctor that watches a mole for changes he would rather just cut it off. My last bioposy came back as a modertly atypical not cancer and he still wants to cut more off instead of just watching the area! There is no solid evidence it will ever turn into cancer so for cosmetic purposes why do it?? MONEY!!! So now that I chose not to he dropped me from his practice. I would have never went back anyways and will never recommend him or his group!

Takes his time to explain procedures he is performing. Explains after care, not to mention just an all around good guy.

I recently had a concern about a spot that had gotten darker on my face and decided I better get a professional opinion. An appointment was made with Dr. Whalen. The office was being torn up for major renovations which caught me off guard but wasn't a factor in my positive experience. The check-in process was so pleasant that i felt like i was talking to my neighbor, not my doctor's assistants. I had barely sat in my chair before I was called to be seen. I explained my history, my concerns to the nurse and within 5-10minutes Dr. Whalen arrived. He listened carefully to my concerns and proceeded to inspect and mark every single spot on my entire body. He then had the nurse come in and take digital photos. He gave a confident feeling that if there was any spot of even slight concern he would have taken next steps, but none was found. He even took time to write a prescription for a plantar's wart on my foot. The whole experience was efficient, very professional and thorough. … When i was leaving I remembered that i forgot to ask him a few questions about some products i had recently started using on my skin. No problem, the nurse showed me to another room, he came quickly in, reviewed my products and give me his opinion. He could have easily declined, but he made the extra time. I was definitely pleased with my experience here.

My experience with Dr. Whalen was the worst I've had with any doctor in my life. I saw the doctor for what turned out to be a pre-cancer on my face. He said it had only a 10% chance of becoming cancerous, so this did not concern me. However, I did look him in the eye and clearly state that I did not like the mark cosmetically. He looked displeased because, in my opinion upon afterthought, he could not do anything cosmetically right then for an additional fee. He then did a freezing procedure, which I had every reason to believe was cosmetic. After 3 months the mark was much worse, so I called the office and a receptionist explained IN ONE MINUTE what the doctor neglected to. She said the freezing procedure was not cosmetic, it goes deep into skin to prevent cancer. I NEVER would have agreed to this procedure had it been explained. It is my honest opinion that Dr. Whalen took it upon himself to decide what was best for me and didn't mind collecting a quick fee in doing so.

Dr. Whalen possesses one of the most caring and compassionate bedside manners of any practitioner in the field. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for an excellent dermatologist!
