Dr. Jay Cartwright Oates, MD

I'm confused by others reviews. I cannot give enough praise for Dr. Oates. He is fantastic. I took a fall, shattered my calcaneus bone (heel) & broke my ankle in numerous places. The 1st surgeon told me I'd "never walk again". I saw Dr. Oates a few days later. He saw my x-rays before coming in to exam me. The door opened and in walked the giant man. The 1st thing he said was "OUCH" and believe me, he was right on point with that ouch. He told me he could "fix me" AND HE DID. He went way above & beyond to "fix me". I have nothing but praise for this Gentle Giant Doctor. I've referred him many times and if I ever need his specialties again, I will not hesitate to make an appointment.

If I had not been left incapacitated by his surgery, for such a lengthy period of time, I would have sued Dr. Oates, for malpractice!He performed hammertoe corrective surgery, and had to wait in excruciating pain for 6 months to have surgery to correct his first surgery.First surgery was horrible outcome, 2nd left me improved, but constant pain, due to the permanent damage from 1st surgery.because he was so great at this type of surgery.His surgical skills were fine...his post-op care, I consider to have been exceedingly NEGLIGENT.Over a year of surgery to basic recovery time...prescribed narcotics for extreme pain for a year.Oops..he forgot I was taking them for so long.Could not function, at all for first year.Attempted to save my career, but, I continued to be in massive pain.I, therefore, lost my ability to function in my work.Had maintained a high figure income, prior.Income decreased, significantly, in all years, to follow.He has a good reputation, but, only because I was so… disfunctional, mentally-due to the lengthy pain meds...and, continued years physically-due to permanent damage and conditions, that resulted.

Misdiagnosis and really uncaring attitude; preoccupied with something else-who knows what

Based on the diagnosis made by "other" surgeons (who had performed an ultrasound, x-rays, a needle biopsy), Dr. Oates performed a simple procedure in his office and corrected my problem. Awesome! As it relates to cost, his charge was in the neighborhood of $500 .... whereas I was looking at $20,000 for the "other" surgeon! I know .... because the proposed procedure was already performed on my other foot ....

Dr. Oates is very straight forward, no nonsense, and let's you know the game plan. He was able to get me in on an emergency surgery which was fantastic. Don't expect a warm and fuzzy bed side manner, which is fine considering I had nurses for that (he handled my sarcastic wit well) just MAKE SURE you have someone with you to hear his instructions and comments. Very thorough explaining to my parents after surgery. His office staff is nice and and great with appointment scheduling. I would recommend!

I have been a patient of Dr Oates for 29 years. He has always been straight and upfront with me. I have recommended him to numerous friends and family and all have commented on his great level of care. He does not give you false hope and goes out of his way to help you anyway he can. He has great beside manners and is very easy to talk to. I don't know of too many doctors that will take as much time with their patients as he does. I highly recommend him.

Dr. Oates was open and honest from the beginning. He told me to follow his instructions, exactly, and my pain level would be minimal. He was right. While I had a long road to full recovery, it was almost painless. Dr. Oates has a great bedside manner.

This is a straight-talking doctor. He knows his stuff and he does not sugar-coat it. His recommendations are spot on. I have scheduled another surgery for my other foot. The last surgery was perfect and healing time, as he predicted, could be a year. It was around 8 mos. to get back to normal.

Dr. Jay Oates was one of the best doctors I have ever gone to. Henever let me hurt once. I had a achilese tendon surgery as I ruptured it. He even had me on a morphene pump & I never had to use it once. I highly recommend him.

This doctor has a very bad reputation for his bedside manner, and now I see why! My hope was that his good reputation for surgury would make up for any issues in his approach or attitude, but it didn't. There are too many good orthopedists in Houston to see someone who is as rude and patonizing as Dr. Oates.
