Dr. Jay Matthew Portnoy, MD

Dr. Portnoy has been my son and daughter’s allergy/asthma specialist for over 15 years. I read the other reviews on this site for Dr. Portnoy and was SHOCKED. I have not experienced any of the issues others have. Dr. Portnoy always talks to my children directly ~ and if they don’t answer, then looks to me for the answers. I have never experienced arrogance, ignorance, or rudeness EVER. Dr. Portnoy, in my most humble opinion, has saved my children’s lives, and improved their overall quality of life significantly over the years. I am so grateful! I find Dr. Portnoy to be extremely knowledgeable; explaining all facets of treatment to both me and my children, including side effects of medication. My daughter was in Children’s Mercy Hospital at least once a month, if not more ~ for severe uncontrolled asthma attacks that needed hospital intervention to overcome. Dr. Portnoy worked tirelessly to get my daughter approved for Dupixent for her severe asthma and eczema, when insurance kept… rejecting it. After much work on the doctor’s part, insurance finally approved it, and my daughter has not been to the hospital even once for asthma since starting the Dupixent, and her eczema has completely cleared up. My son refuses injectable medicine, and Dr. Portnoy was very understanding ~ non-judgemental and prescribed inhalers and allergy medicine for my son that took a bit of time to “tweak”, but we have now found the right combination that works for him. Dr. Portnoy never looks down on my son for refusing a particular treatment; an alternative is always recommended. Dr. Portnoy also thoroughly explains how to use the different medicines for both my children, and is always available to answer questions through the portal when they arise. Unless this doctor retires before my kids are 18 (which isn’t long now), I will continue to take them to see this amazing and wonderful provider.

Do not recommend him at all. He has horrible people skills and shames food allergy parents. Didn’t take time to even learn history of child before making judgemental accusations. Will never take my child back to him.

I am not sure why this doctor works in pediatrics. He was extremely cold and never addressed my child personally. Even before he reached out to touch her he did not even speak to her. He was unable to answer basic questions regarding my child allergies. He offered no treatments other than allergy shots. Yet he was unable to explain how the allergy shots worked. He said that the nurse needed to explain it. He also seemed completely bothered and put out if we asked him any questions. My child sees other specialists within the same hospital and they have also agreed with us that she has some issues that need to be resolved. However when I asked him about these issues he said that she is just a child that probably has a cold. These are not cold symptoms. I can't believe that this is his specialty when he seemingly knows nothing. He would often just shrug his shoulders and stare blankly at us. And then just walk out of the room. I can't believe this is how a physician conducts his practice.… Completely unacceptable. And a complete waste of time and money. I can see now why we were able to get into his office so quickly. I can't imagine that he is able to sustain a caseload when he is unable to treat families with compassionate Care nor is he able to provide them with proper testing and treatment.

My overall impression is that he's arrogant and does not listen to patient concerns. Would not acknowledge child risk of allergic reaction by getting allergens on broken eczema covered skin. Would not acknowledge risk of toddlers touching contaminated surfaces and then touching eyes, nose, or mouth. Shamefully contributed to an academic article that states black mold isn't known to cause health problems. He tried to defend himself by saying it was published before he could decide if he wanted his name removed. What's to think about? Must have really wanted that paycheck to have to think about whether or not he wanted to lie. Disgraceful.

Will not be back to him ever! There are other great allergist in the area. He doesn't care.
