Dr. Jay Cary Tyroler, MD

I've been a patient here for more than 20 year -- but no more! The good points: 1) Drs. Tyroler and Yositis are top notch. The two PAs, Beverly and Mary Ellen, are great. The bad points: 1) The office staff has always been rude and contemptuous of patients. It's gotten worse recently since they became a "concierge" practice and began charging exorbitant monthly fees just to be an A-list patient. 2) The practice itself is stuck in the 1980s in patient care and communication. They actually asked me to fax something to them the other day! 3) The final straw: I had to cancel a physical due to work demands and cancelled it SIX days in advance! They had the nerve to tell me I never cancelled and charged me $100 for a skipped appointment. I have the phone records to prove I called. 4) I have asked to have the office manager call me on several occasions and even sent a letter directly to Dr. Tyroler via US mail (no email address, remember?) and no one has acknowledged to replied. I've… now had to register complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the Virginia Department of Health. I'm leaving this practice now, despite the good medical care I received there, because the office staff is just deplorable.

Rude and insensitive. This is a big disappointment as I was a patient nag t there a long time.

Extremely Rude office staff specially someone named Dolly. She doesn't seem to like being asked any questions. Will cut you off rudely. Staff members at any Doctor's offices should try to make you feel better than you were feeling before calling and not make you feel like, its your fault that you called them.

Never spend enough time or care about his patient

I had Dr Tyroler has my primary care physician for nine years. At first I was very pleased with the care received. As the years went on I felt the practice was becoming more of "money first" care later. The "money managing staff" could be pretty cold and harsh. I decided to find a new physician since my particular Cigna Insurance plan no longer was accepted. I found this out after I made an appointment asked the nurse or medical assistant if the insurance plan covered the visit and was assured that it did. Once I got there and checked in only then did I find out that I would not be covered. I left without seeing anyone after taking the time off of work to be there. My new physician seems to be more interested in being a health care provider. We both agreed it would be a good idea to get my records from Dr. Tyroler's office and I filled out the proper forms. The next day my doctor's office called and let me know I would be charged about $90.00 in total to have my records… released to my new physician. Since this is all done electronically I found that to be outrageous since this doctor to doctor. I will do without the records thanks. If you have a lot of money you will do okay at this office. The office where I once received kind and courteous care I feel is long gone.

Hard to get office staff to answer the phone to coordinate on behalf of client patient.

Love the doctor...hate the staff. Really they should all be fired. Rude, Rude, Rude and uncaring. They all are in such a rush. You will spend hours and hours waiting...in the room...on the phone. But doctor is worth it...just fire the staff.

I have seen Dr. Tyroler for more than 5 years, and only went to him because my old medical coverage required a primary care provider and his office was convenient to my home. While he, personally, has a very good bedside manner, his office support is not reflective of that. They are rude and unresponsive. Further, it is impossible to get an appointment to see him on short notice for an illness. It is also difficult to get referrals for conditions that require a specialist's care.
