Dr. Jean Heather Hoffman-Censits, MD

There isn’t a physician out there that I’d trust more. We were so impressed with the attention and information we received from the moment we opened the door. Our whole journey with her and her team has been an absolute pleasure.  We have heartfelt gratitude for Dr Hoffman-Censits as she is, without a doubt, the brightest ray of hope we had had since learning of my diagnosis.   Their knowledge and compassion is beyond compare.  I didn’t feel like a patient; I felt like I was surrounded by family who truly cared what might happen.  That is a rare event in todays fast-paced medical environment.

I was a patient of Dr. Hoffman for three years until she left Jefferson. I have severe post cancer pain. Have had it post surgery till today. She was not interested and avoided the subject. My cancer prognosis is good and she was only there to basically order tests for three years. The remarks about her bedside manner are true. She is very smart but very uncaring and cold. When I saw the new oncologist based off of her notes she wrote he thought I was doing great until we actually spoke. My quality of life is a 2 out of ten and pain is 8 out of ten. Based on her notes you would think I was wonderful but in reality I am in remision but quite disabled. Her notes have not been helpful when used for insurance or other Doctors. If you have a good cancer outlook/prognosis and need tests and follow up she might be ok but if I needed chemo or radiation I would have certainly changed doctors in retrospect should have really changed anyway. Hindsight is 20/20. Still dealing with repercussions… of being her patient 6 years out. The reviews,that say she is "wonderful" are not true.

I have been a patient of Dr. Censits for 4 months going through chemo. I have found her to be one of the most caring, knowledge and forthright doctors I have had contact with. I have never seen any of the undesirable traits mentioned in other emails. She have been extremely accessible more than any other doctor I have had. I really can't say enough god things about her...

I am perplexed with the negative comments re: Dr. Hoffman. She is professional and caring and cares deeply for her patients. When my original oncologist l(who I loved) left Jefferson, Dr. Hoffman provided me an easy transition and was acutely aware of my history. I always feel satisfied with her attention to my concerns and with her interest in me as more than a patient. She provides straightforward and clearly articulated information re: my treatment options. As a patient, her demeanor and sincerity are greatly appreciated.

I have been in a Phase I prostate cancer clinical trial under the care and supervision of Dr. Hoffman for nearly three years and have spent many hours meeting with her. I find her intelligent, professional, thorough, trustworthy, dedicated, perceptive, intuitive, investigative, and collaborative and I could give at least one example of each. She creates a comfortable environment in which I answer her many questions in total honesty and confidentiality. On the personal side, she's pleasant, kind, and caring; while going way beyond her duties on several occasions to help with ancillary issues like smoking cessation. I'm extremely fortunate to have Dr. Hoffman and her staff managing my cancer and I wouldn't trade her for anyone.

Dr. Hoffman lacks very basic bedside manner. She would probably be a much better professor or researcher. She is simply not a people person. She was my father's oncologist for a few years. It was always like pulling teeth to get information from her. She didn't like to be questioned or often answered questions in a very perfunctory way. I always regret not transferring to Fox Chase tot find a doctor who was more compassionate, a better communicator and had more experience treating advanced stage cancer. After my father died she was the only doctor who did not call or send a personal card to acknowledge his death. Prior to his death, my father had been treated by several doctors at Jefferson and Einstein - everyone except Dr. Hoffman personally reached out the family - and Dr. Hoffman was the one we interacted with consistently. Did I mention her nurse is overworked, slightly disorganized and has even less personality. Please, if you have an ill loved please find another… doctor/hospital.

It is very mixed feelings that I write this review. Dr. Hoffman doesn't have the best bedside manner. She will eventually come around, but you really have to work the relationship. She also doesn't clearly explain the disease prognosis. You have to research and come ready with lists of questions. She will never offer information -- she have to ask. Her staff is some overwhelmed many things fall through the cracks. You have to take notes and detailed records. The office will never admit to making an error -- and if they do. It like OH WELL. The wait times are ridiculous. Dr. Hoffman is very smart and caring and when she matures and gains more confidence and experience in dealing with challenging and sensitive medical situations she has the potential to be a great doc. She not astute in translating complex data and information into plain speak. When you drill down and ask tough questions -- she will say that the is the best choice or options. But will not provide the rationale or… reasoning and is often disturbed if you challenge or question her decision making. Also, she often says, "I don't know" when she is asked a questions. I am unsure whether she really doesn't know -- or she is just punting. She was also very upset when I mentioned the idea of getting a second opinion -- that's a bad sign. Most doctors dealing with complex issues welcome additional thinking and research. I do not think I would be completely comfortable with a referral. If you are uninformed consumer or a hands-off patient then she could be a great fit. If you are very interested in you care and treatment you should fine a doctor with compassion and competence.

Dr. Jean Hoffman-Censits is an excellent doctor! She is very knowledgeable and her bedside manner is second to none!

I read a comment on this site about Dr. Hoffman and was quite disturbed. She was described as uncaring and someone who lies to her patients. My family have found her to be in every way the opposite. She spent more time with my husband and us than any other doctor had who had been involved in his cancer care. I believe the author of the other comment was writing about another woman physician who works in the same department. She is known and through my own experience I have learned she (E.M., MD) is an unethical, self-centered person. Dr. Hoffman is not her. Dr. Hoffman is a dream.
