Dr. Jeffrey Morris Miller, MD

He's a narcissist. He likes to hear himself talk. He's not up to date with current research even though he prides himself on practicing evidence based medicine. He doesn't remember what he hears and doesn't use data minfully or usefully. Doesn't track medication or medication interactions - extremely dangerous. He likes to feel important, but he treats his private practice like a hobby. It's not serious for him. Not even when it's life and death for his patients. Buyer beware.

I am a medical student in my final year of training. I have been under the care of Dr. Miller for treatment of bipolar illness for several months after having been very unwell for a few years, with multiple hospitalizations and resulting leaves of absence from med school. Dr. Miller rapidly stabilized me when I was in a bad place, after a long period of my feeling like there was no hope for the future. After a comprehensive evaluation diagnosing which subtype of bipolar depression I was experiencing, and considering every single medication I had ever taken in the past (and its effects), he recommended a different medication I had never heard of/considered. About two weeks later, other people started to say I seemed to be doing better. Maybe a week after that, I realized they were right. Since then, I have gotten to the point that I have been able to focus again and do my best in med school (even on objectively stressful surgical and emergency medicine rotations), and feel like… I am truly, deep down happy for an extended period, perhaps for the first time since college. Dr. Miller is very caring and empathic, but not at the cost of being dishonest or disingenuous--he is not hesitant or afraid to tell you what he is worried about and/or if he thinks you are not taking good care of yourself. He practices evidence-based medicine (meaning he uses the most current research to inform the treatment plan he makes in collaboration with you). He does primarily CBT-based therapy, meaning that his therapy work with you tends to be immediately productive and useful, concrete, skills based, and relevant to your life and relationships. He is creative about how to make medications work for you (whether that means thinking with you about the best dose, how to time the dose(s), or finding other ways to reduce side effects etc.), but in a subtle way he also makes it clear that his goal is to help make you well/stable and that there is no compromise worth that goal (and now that I feel better, I have to say that he is 100% right). He also understands/emphasizes the critical role of regular sleep, healthy relationships, exercise, and substance abstinence in mood stability with bipolar illness (and actively monitors these parameters, and has realistic/constructive suggestions for how to optimize them). Dr. Miller is a great psychiatrist for patients who study/practice medicine, because he is obviously very smart/experienced, but also personable and kind, and most importantly is gently yet still firmly able to establish that he is your doctor and you are his patient (without it being uncomfortable at all). He always, without fail, asks critically important questions like "when was the last time you've had thoughts that life is not worth living?" (These questions can be life-saving if you are unfortunate enough to be in that situation, and trying to hide it or not knowing how to say it.) Dr. Miller also involves family (with your permission), promptly returns calls (pretty much always the same day), tries his best to see you ASAP if you are not feeling well, makes emergency action plans with you and your family right away, and has a direct phone line available for true emergency situations when he is not in the office (I have never needed this phone line, but its nice to have that sense of security).

Dr. Miller is perhaps the most attentive, caring and compassionate psychiatrist I've ever encountered. I feel very fortunate to be in his care.

Dr. Miller was very responsive when I experienced emergency situations. He called me right back and helped resolve my issue immediately. He is one of the most empathic and caring doctors I have encountered and this is so important when you are undergoing a crisis. He is also one of the rare psychiatrists who is very well trained in psychotherapy and actually listens to you and provides you with invaluable feedback instead of just automatically writing scripts like so many other psychiatrists do in our days.

Dr. Miller is the best, most caring psychiatrist I have ever been to see. I can't recommend him more highly!

I have been to several psychiatrists in my life and Dr. Miller is by far my favorite! I can't recommend him more enthusiastically!
