Dr. Jessica Opoku-Anane, MD

I went for an initial consultation with Dr. Opoku-Anane and her nurse because I have endometriosis, a chronic illness. I waited 3 months for an appointment because I was impressed by her resume. Both had a terrible bedside manner. Dr. Opoku-Anane was stone-faced the entire time. Her nurse didn't know much about endometriosis and told me some basic facts about the condition. I told her I was diagnosed 8 years ago and already knew this information but she continued. Her nurse should try to learn more about endometriosis by reading, attending medical conferences, learning from patients, etc. They seem to have a formulaic way of treating endo patients, which I really disliked. There are over 100 million women with endo - each with a unique set of values, backgrounds and symptoms. They should have more customized recommendations. They kept pushing me over and over to get an IUD when I said I didn't want this. Dr. Opoku-Anane also made some extreme recommendations, which don't make sense as… I am generally a healthy 35 year old woman with manageable period pain (just 1-2 over the counter painkillers per month are enough). When I told her I had some minor vaginal itching, she told me I may need neuro-modulation (i.e. sticking a metal object up my vagina to monitor my bladder). The vaginal itching was likely just a normal side effect of a new birth control pill. She also said to consider testosterone medicine, which would permanently change my feminine voice. After all, there are gentler treatment options for endometriosis like birth control and pelvic floor physical therapy. Like most people, I choose to visit a doctor to be healed and to feel better. Instead, when I left that appointment, I started crying and felt confused/scared. I will never go back and do not recommend other women with endometriosis to see her.

I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy with Dr. Opoku today and she and her staff were amazing! She was very caring and attentive from the first time I met her. I appreciate that because bedside manner is what a lot of doctors lack these days. Even though I’m sore right now, I had to write a review on how amazing this doctor is! Thank you ??

Dr Opoku-Anane is the complete package. A highly skilled doctor that is professional, compassionate, kind, caring, and great mentor to students and new doctors . Easy to communicate with as she explains things well and answered all my questions. She is very confident, which put me at ease before my surgery. I saw many doctors before her and she was the only one that could help me. My pain is gone and I can lead a normal life again. Highly sought after, but well worth the wait. The UCSF facility is great.

She he’s been 1 in a millions. She is knowledgeable and one of the top physicians. I was in pain and she took care of me every step of the way and after surgery I was better in 2 days. Compared to friends and family I had the best outcome. Thank you so much!!

I had an excellent experience at the SF clinic where Dr Opoku-Anane got me in same-day for a scope procedure. She is professional and thorough. So glad to find a dr. of excellence who was down to earth at the same time.

After waiting a long time for an appointment, I was disappointed with how lacking she was in compassion. Perhaps it was partially due to the equipment, as it appeared to be very technically advanced. She spent most of her time looking at the computer, inputting my answers to her mechanical questions. There was no real engagement. I didn't feel like she really paid attention to me as a person, she was just filling out a questionnaire. As though my condition was so commonplace. As pleasant as she was, she barely looked me in the eye. I never received an actual exam. I felt like one in a number of people she was just getting through to get to the one patient who might interest her - or perhaps the end of her day. Given that she is working in a specialized clinic, I was, at the very least, expecting someone who seemed interested in helping me solve the extreme pain I was in, not just refer me to another doctor who might be able to solve it, only to have to come back to her if that didn't… work.

Has no idea how to treat a patient. Fat phobic. No understanding of pain. Prescribes antidepressants and "nerve pain" meds off label rather than addressing the problem.
