Dr. Joel Travis Callahan Jr. JR., MD

I have Blue cross blue shield of North Carolina. When I read through the handbook I was sent I was advised that I did not need a referral to see a specialist. When I called and TRIED to make an appointment I was told I needed a referral from my primary, and when I did get a referral it would still be a 2 month wait (at least) to get an appointment. I have a pinched nerve and my right hand and arm go completely NUMB. I guess some doctors make their own rules regardless of the patients insurance or their need for medical attention. I chose this dr. Because I live in Hendersonville and it would be convenient. I guess I will have to go outside of Hendersonville to find a neurologist.

Dr. Callahan is a great doctor. He listens to his patients and the staff in the office are super nice. Im so glad i was referred to him. If you cant get ahold of him through the office then you can send him a message ad he responds quickly would highly recommend him to anyoe

After making an appt with dr. Callahan for a post c.v.a pt. Was told after pt review that a p.a would suffice. Poor judgment! When we arrived5 min. Late we were told to wait, when I complained that we were supposed to see dr. Callahan we were told he had a three mos. wait and because we were late the p.a would not see us!! This office is terrible and because a neurologist would not see a post c.v.a pt.he doesn’t seem much better. I would definately not recommend this doctor or office and I am in the medical profession.

I have had a number of serious health issues since 1995. Dr. Callahan became my neurologist in 2012. He listens to me and doesn't talk at me, but with me. He pays attention to the whole patient, not just a series of symptoms. I have probably seen between 50 to 70 doctors over the years, and Dr. Callahan is by far my favorite. He is the most competent, compassionate and patient. His office staff is top notch and it is a pleasure to work with them.

I saw Doctor Callahan Jr. for several months for a seizure disorder. He is indeed a great neurologist, and there are only four in Meridian, Mississippi. He is probably the best. He was all business, which is not a problem for me. However, about a year and a half ago I had a life-threatening seizure. I was in the Intensive Care Unit for three days and in a hospital room for two more. At the time, my only insurance was Medicare, and since I wasn't working, I made efforts to pay him, but one day I got a letter informing me that I needed to find a new doctor within 30 days! As anyone with seizures knows, the medications cannot be stopped for any reason or a seizure will occur. This came as a great shock to me, as I had come to respect his opinion. My advice, either have cash with you or an insurance card, or you'll be finding a new doctor.
