Dr. Joel Norman, MD

Dr Norman and his staff are amazing! He's direct, explains things well, no sugar coating but facts. He's kind, polite, and professional. He removed my tumor with precision and skill. Every appointment I've had was on time and went well. I was hesitant to see him after reading some of these reviews, but I'm so glad I did!

Dr Norman and his staff were great from the first time I met them. Dr Norman is straight forward and honest. I guess that could be interpreted as lacking bedside manner, but I did not feel that way at all. I wanted a surgeon who I could trust to help me, which he did! I had a C5-7 fusion in my neck with immediate pain relief in my shoulder and arm. 8 days post-surgery I feel great. I'm back to work with minimal post-surgery pain. I do recommend Dr Norman and his staff!

Stay away from this man. This Dr. is extremely pompous and egotistical. He preformed an Discectomy on my back. I was having pain and trouble walking and standing. I was using a cane to walk. I returned to his office after 6 weeks post surgery. I was still having pain and still using my cane to walk. I could not pick up my right foot. He told me I was ready to return to work full duty. The nurse with him looked at him and said are your sure about this? I was a firefighter/EMT for 26 years. It was like he didn't care about nothing had changed. You are ready to go back to a fire tuck he told me. I could barley walk or stand. I went to a Neurologist 3 months later. He looked at my new MRI. He said it looked like I either had surgery by someone that did not know what they was doing or did not do anything. So, stay away from this person.

They were very rude to my mother who has had 7 back surgerys. Told her he doesn't see what is wrong. My mom left crying because he was so rude to her

Dr. Norman performed back surgery on me in 2015 to correct a misalignment of my vertebrae at L4, L5, and S1. I had been in agony for months prior to my surgery, unable to walk more than a few feet without having to stop and catch my breath. However, since my surgery, I have felt great except for an occasional twinge of soreness as would be expected for someone my age (71). Thanks to Dr. Norman and his team at Fort Sanders, I have been exercising regularly at the gym for the past 4 years, doing strength training and walking 20-30 minutes 4 days a week on a treadmill. Dr. Norman is an excellent neurosurgeon, and I am so grateful for his skill and expertise in restoring my healthy back.

I seen Dr. Norman TWICE, both times, I left in tears! I originally seen him for my cervical kyphosis. I lost feelings in multiple fingers and was keeping migraines. My 2nd reason was my lower back was hurting and my legs were giving out! He called me a LIAR both times. I went back to my ortho, and he immediately found my issue with a freakin x Ray!!!! I had spondylolthesis with a pats defect, basically my lower back was broke and every time I took a breath, my tailbone was hitting nerves!!! I have 2 spinal fusions now, and have 0 pain, thanks to UT!!! I’m telling you stay clear of this man, especially since my ortho diagnosed me with an x Ray, and this man couldn’t even see it on an mri!!!

He is a very caring and excellent surgeon!

Dr. Norman did an excellent job resecting a benign neurofibroma from my leg with zero nerve damage. I wish I had found Dr. Norman sooner for this surgery. Should I have another neurofibroma and if it is in Dr. Normans’s expertise then I would certainly choose him to be my surgeon again.

I had an MRI which was done at a local hospital, which the doctor said that he looked over my MRI, which he never explained what he had found. He was in the room about 3 Min. and never even examined me what so ever, just simply said that there was nothing wrong with my back. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone. I'm going to get a second opinion and find a another doctor.

Been to see him twice. Neither time did he spend going over test results wasn't aware of some of the stuff that had come up on my CT scans. He spent approx 2 min reviewing last CT scan I had done. Couldn't answer any questions we had regarding my concerns or symptoms. Wouldn't reccomend him for any neurological issues or concerns.
